Chicago Bears Reportedly Could Double Down At Key Position In Draft

-

Patterns always tell a story with general managers in the NFL. Some are easier to spot than others. Ryan Poles has developed an interesting reputation over the past three years with the Chicago Bears. His tendency involves doubling down at the same position with multiple draft picks in an attempt to turn a perceived team weakness into a strength. He has done it in some form or fashion every off-season.

2022:

  • 2nd round – S Jaquan Brisker
  • 7th round – S Elijah Hicks

2023:

  • 2nd round – CB Tyrique Stevenson
  • 5th round – CB Terell Smith

2024:

  • 1st round – WR Rome Odunze
  • 4th round (trade) – WR Keenan Allen

According to a source, the belief is Poles might be preparing to do it again in the 2025 draft. Everybody knows the Bears plan to draft a running back early next week. It will most likely be with one of their first two picks. What many haven’t considered is the possibility they might draft two. Experts believe this is one of the strongest running back classes in recent memory, meaning there should be good ones deep into the draft. Head coach Ben Johnson loves to run the ball. It would make sense he’d want to load up at the position.

The Chicago Bears aim to revamp their running back room.

That might seem a bit unnecessary. D’Andre Swift had over 1300 total yards last season. He is a valuable backfield weapon. However, context is key. The 26-year-old was traded by the Detroit Lions in 2023 when Johnson was the offensive coordinator. That was the first sign he wasn’t the biggest fan of Swift. There is no reason to believe that stance has changed in the past two years. Johnson has spoken positively of the running back whenever asked, but the indications are hard to miss that the Chicago Bears would prefer to find alternatives. Drafting two running backs in this class would give them the best opportunity to move on. As always, it all depends on how the board falls next week.

The ignorance about the RB position here is numbing to say the least.

Moving on from D’Andre Swift?!!!

Who in the Wide World of Sports possibly could have seen that coming?

[… from the minute our “perpetual rookie” GM Ryan Poles overpaid for this “lay-down artist” that no team fears.]

Just sayin’.

I read that one of the complaints about Swift is his preference to bounce runs outside, even when designed to be between the tackles. This can’t sit well with coaches or the linemen, and I can’t imagine it results in consistent success on those plays. For that reason I’ve said it wouldn’t neither me to see him packaged with another pick to move up in this draft—originally to #6 with the #10, but I don’t think that’s enough nor are the Raiders that dumb. But you never know who is a fan of Swift…..

Don’t buy them taking Jeanty and another back. If Jeanty had sub-4.4 speed, then maybe. But he’s no faster than Hampton or Judkins.
On the other hand, if the Bears trade back, and get an add’l pick, then I can see them take Hampton and grab a fast RB in 3rd Round.
