Wide receiver isn’t high on the list of Chicago Bears needs going into the draft, but that doesn’t mean the organization will stay completely silent at the position. Head coach Ben Johnson likely wants to remake it in his vision. Already, the Bears have been busy with new additions like Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay. It isn’t crazy to think they might be active in the later rounds and undrafted free agency next month, hoping to find some hidden gems to develop behind starters like D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze.
It appears they have somebody notable they want to meet. Every team in the NFL is allowed to run a local pro day for prospects who have ties to the immediate area. That means anybody who comes from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs can attend. The Bears will be hosting one prominent standout. His name is Brandt Stare. Across his career at Wisconsin-Platteville, he racked up over 3,000 receiving yards and 41 touchdowns. That includes 30 in just the past two seasons.
The Chicago Bears’ interest in Stare is easy to understand.
He is your classic Wes Welker or Julian Edelman type: an undersized white guy with great quickness, strong hands, and sharp route-running skills. Wisconsin-Platteville used him as a weapon all over the field. His ability after the catch often stands out, which is something Johnson seems to covet heavily in his wide receivers. He also has experience as a punt returner. Such versatility makes him an understandable target for the Chicago Bears. Presuming his pro day goes well, he could be a prominent target for them in undrafted free agency. Division III prospects reaching the NFL is rare, but guys who dominate that level of competition deserve a look. He wouldn’t be the first productive player to come from that level.
I like hearing about guys like this. It’s a long offseason and if the Bears are going to take the time to bring the local guy in, it’s interesting to me. UDFAs make teams all the time. And often times they are impact players.
Stare has ability but what about speed? He’s gotta be able to separate.
Instead, for a quick, YAC or deep threat option, why not consider Virginia slot Chris Tyree? Tyree was a RB at Notre Dame before transfer and move to WR with good vision, moves and… 4.29 Mach speed!!!
So silly one failed local player and all future local players are horrible too. Makes perfect sense, in your little world, but not in the real world

Stare is no Bagent, regardless of the stats. Give him an opportunity, but don’t keep him just because he is another cheap local. That was some of the least impressive tape ever. I think he will be embarrassed in a pro camp.
Hey just because a guy went to a division 3 school doesn’t mean he can’t play. Bagent didn’t get drafted but obviously he knows how to play football. Stare could be an undrafted FA that could show out in camp and possibly make a team. Leave no stone unturned as they say. There are plenty of undrafted guys all over the league.
