In case you somehow have missed the conversation for the past three weeks, Matt Eberflus is on the hot seat. The Chicago Bears have crumbled from 4-2 to 4-6 over the last month. Much of it can be traced to the head coach’s poor decision-making in two gut-wrenching losses to Washington and Green Bay. A recent poll revealed that 90% of Bears fans are done with him. They want a change. His inability to solve the offensive issues and horrible situational awareness makes it clear his ceiling has been reached. It is time for a change.
The question is, who will replace him? Rumors are flying about Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, and even an in-house move to Thomas Brown. However, Bleacher Report revealed the expectation that Chicago would pull arguably its biggest swerve of the new millennium at head coach by bringing in a controversial name.
Gruden to the Chicago Bears would be completely unprecedented.
The McCaskey family has a long history of avoiding coaches with big personalities. Dave Wannstedt, Dick Jauron, Lovie Smith, Marc Trestman, John Fox, Matt Nagy, and Eberflus all prove this. Gruden is notorious for being outspoken, demanding, and having a massive ego. He’s loud and boisterous. Another part of this is his track record. Since emerging on the scene in the late 1990s, Gruden has worked almost exclusively with veteran quarterbacks. It started with Rich Gannon in Oakland, then Brad Johnson, Brian Griese, and Jeff Garcia in Tampa Bay. After finally returning to Las Vegas a few years ago, he inherited Derek Carr. Taking over the development of Caleb Williams would be a departure for him.
Nobody can dispute his success. He had winning records with both the Raiders and Buccaneers, won a Super Bowl in 2002, and posted a top-15 offense ten times. He also seemed open to the Chicago Bears job when asked about it on Pardon My Take. There is no question that the hire would grab headlines. It just doesn’t seem like something this organization would consider.

Complete garbage article Eric. Nobody is considering Gruden. Eric will name 50 more possible HCs in the next couple of months. Cheep azz Bears will most likely offer the job to Brown. He will work for cheap as it would be his only chance at a HC job for years. Typical Bears BS. While he might be improving the Offense for the moment, it’s his first crack at being an OC. Who hire a passing game coordinator as their HC? Ya cheap azz Mc Crapskeys that who. Now if they would hire Brian Flores to be HC and fix the… Read more »
Poles is not dumb enough to hire Gruden. If he is still with the team next year he will bring in an offensive guy with somewhat of a proven track record with building offenses and working with young Qbs. Honestly I think Kingsbury could possibly be a decent fit. Imo his main downfall here in AZ was his lack of knowledge of the NFL system. The dude can obviously build up a QB and run an offense. I can see him learning from his mistakes and becoming a stronger candidate. He got away from the college offenses and is having… Read more »

@TGena, you’re right about Nagys ineptness, but I hope you’re not saying that’s why you don’t try getting another boy genius to build a QB and a team. I’ll repeat, at the time of his hire, he was a much better hire than Fluss was at the time of his. Pace had the right idea, just picked the wrong guy. It’s worth noting that that while Pace drafted Mitch he made the mistake to keep John Fox. Who were coaches hired that year, McVeigh, Shanahan, and McDermott. Could he have gotten any of the 3? Maybe not but you try… Read more »
Oh, hell to the no. This dude is a giant pain in the ass, and he brings with him a career .500 record. Sorry, not impressed. Oh, and his ring? Not really all that impressed there either. Dungy built the team he won with, he didn’t maintain that one year of success despite having a roster filled with Pro Bowlers and Hall of Famers, and when he won his only Super Bowl appearance (as HC), he was playing a team that he knew virtually every play call before the snap. His best talent was sitting around telling fart jokes with… Read more »
