The Chicago Bears offensive line finally seemed to be gaining some continuity over the past few weeks, with the same five guys starting every game for almost a month. So naturally, everything went downhill in a hurry against the Washington Commanders. It started badly when left tackle Braxton Jones had to exit with a knee injury and didn’t return. Then left guard Teven Jenkins went down not once but twice with a knee issue. Despite this, the Bears managed to put together two scoring drives in the 4th quarter. Sadly, we all know what happened in the end.
It appears the football gods have decided to add injury to insult. In their first injury report of the week, Jones is out with his knee issue. What people weren’t ready for is that rookie Kiran Amegadjie, who replaced him on Sunday against Washington, is also out with a calf problem. Jenkins was limited. The only solace for what looks like a dangerous situation is that Larry Borom practiced in full for the first time in over a month. Head coach Matt Eberflus revealed Amegadjie is unlikely to play Sunday, which means it will be Borom or Jones if he can return in time.
The Chicago Bears offensive line depth is being tested.
Don’t forget Bill Murray is out for the year with a torn pec he suffered in the same game. One has to feel bad for Amegadjie. The 3rd round pick hadn’t played for a year, recovering from a quad injury suffered in his final season at Yale. He finally returns to practice, gets actual playing time, and immediately gets hurt again. That is rotten luck. It also paints a clear picture that the Chicago Bears offensive line remains an unfinished project. They are still relying on late round draft picks and veteran cast-offs from other teams. Darnell Wright is the only player who has started every game and looked solid. It isn’t a coincidence he is the only 1st round pick in the building. GM Ryan Poles has to get serious about this problem if he is going to give Caleb Williams any chance to succeed.
TGena, it’s only Thursday.
@jmscooby — We are both missing the point: Drafting an “incapacitated” O-lineman at #75 in the NFL draft while passing on other able-bodied linemen (in a scenario such as the Chicago Bears at present — a team, in desparate need of offensive line help) is an incompetent act on the part of any GM. And here, that GM is named Ryan Poles. _____________ Compare and contrast the PFF grades: Kiran Amegadjie, T, CHI: [3rd. Rd., #75] OFF/PBlk/RBlk: 49.8 — 44.7 — 59.6 54 plays. Tanor Bortolini, C, IND: [4th Rd., #118] OFF/PBlk/RBlk: 66.3 — 77.3 — 64.2 160 plays. DJ… Read more »
I’ve been saying for 3 years that the OL should be the prioritized. Instead of drafting DB Stevenson we could have taken Centers Schmitz or Scruggs, or OG Torrence. Instead of Pickens we could have grabbed KC’s starting LT Wanya Morris.
At the very least, our OL would have had great depth if not been one of the top 12 in the league. It bothered me then, and now it really pisses me off that we added to a defense that didn’t need those guys and neglected the OL that did need upgrades!
LOL Flus told the Chicago media that the O-Line did a good job on Sunday, just look at the rushing yards. (there were some great blocks actually for Swift- esp on the outside).
Drives the media nuts that Flus won’t take their devil bait all the time.
Can’t wait to see next year’s draft. Finally we’ll get some Linemen.
You literally can’t make this S$&T up with the Bears offensive line issues. We haven’t even had a game with all their starters yet.
