Matt Nagy has tried everything in his power to assure people that the Chicago Bears offense would eventually get on track. Well here we are five weeks into the season and it’s not getting better. It’s getting worse. Way worse. It can’t be argued that the group just delivered its worst half of play of the season and it wasn’t even close. The fact it came at the expense of an average Oakland Raiders defense makes it sting all the worse.
Breakdowns came at all levels. The offensive line allowed three sacks and committed some brutal penalties. They also again couldn’t get the ground game going. David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen combined for 16 yards and six carries. Passing the ball wasn’t any better. Chase Daniel, despite his valuable “experience”, managed just 56 yards with an interception. It was an abysmal showing that points the finger directly at Nagy. This is his offense. He was hired to make it better.
That hasn’t happened. Now in fairness injuries have played a part but the job of a good coach is to adjust to what he has. Nagy hasn’t done that enough. The Bears have one of the best defenses they’ve had in years. Despite a crummy showing in London, it’s good enough to make a deep playoff run. As anybody knows though, teams don’t win championships these days without being able to score points.
Chicago Bears offense needs a serious kick in the butt
It’s clear that the entire unit just isn’t playing with enough discipline or energy. Talent can’t be used as an excuse. There are too many good players in that group for it to be playing this bad. This comes down to preparation, urgency, and discipline. They simply don’t have enough of any of those things. Until that changes, performances like the one against Oakland will keep cropping up and the Bears’ hopes of getting back to the playoffs will slowly fade away.

The good news is they’ll have a bye week to figure out what they’ve done wrong. Mitch Trubisky will also likely return from his shoulder injury, which should offer a bit more playmaking potential. They’ll also be healthier in general and fresh after some exhausting road trips. That doesn’t mean things will get easier. Not with the Saints, Chargers, and Eagles on deck. This could get ugly real fast.
