Chicago Bears Have An Early Favorite For Next Training Camp Hero

-

One thing can always be counted on with the Chicago Bears. Every year, an unheralded name emerges in training camp to become a fan favorite. Everybody remembers Dane Sanzenbacher and Tanner Gentry. There’s only been one practice so far in Lake Forest, but one unexpected name sent an early message. Most people weren’t familiar with Aron Cruickshank when he arrived. All they knew was he came in as an undrafted free agent after five seasons of college, two in Wisconsin and three at Rutgers.

Barely a day into his time at Halas Hall, and already he may have the catch of camp. Not only does he showcase an excellent release on the play, but he delivers an absolutely mesmerizing one-handed stab.

This is nothing new for Cruickshank. He had a reputation for making such catches in college. While his production was never massive, his 385 yards and two touchdowns last season was his best to date. He also added 115 rushing yards and another touchdown. It’s clear the young man has versatility. So it isn’t surprising the Bears liked him.

Aron Cruickshank also has another advantage.

He’s a special teams presence. During his long college run, he earned a reputation as a dangerous kick returner with four touchdowns. He also added a punt return touchdown in 2021. Good things seem to happen whenever he touches the ball. He was recorded as having 4.45 speed, so that’s a plus. The primary concern with him is size. Scouting reports have him around 5’9 and 170 lbs. That is short and light for the NFL. It might relegate him to a returner role unless he can prove otherwise.

We already know he has good hands. His route-running seems pretty sharp for a rookie too. He also has plenty of blocking experience despite his size concerns. Nobody will ever accuse him of being soft. There are also frequent instances of him being used on jet sweeps and other such plays. Luke Getsy loves doing stuff like that, so it’s another point in the young receiver’s favor. He has a lot of work to do before making the roster. That catch will be something the coaches remember, though.

He’s no V.Jones but maybe a practice squad candidate. You never know where injuries can lead over the course of a season. He may get his shot in November. Best to be ready.

This may mean goodbye to Velus Jones if things work with him this year.
