Chicago Bears Are Targeting 3 Positions At Trade Deadline

-

Having no game this week has allowed GM Ryan Poles time to fully assess whether the Chicago Bears will be active at the upcoming trade deadline. Everybody knows the team has taken big swings in each of the past two years. They acquired Chase Claypool in 2022 and Montez Sweat in 2023. With two 2nd round picks next year, it feels like Poles is well-equipped to dive in again before November 5th. What remains uncertain is who, if anybody, the Bears will target over the next few weeks.

A source informed SM that the team has three possible position groups circled. The first and biggest priority is the interior offensive line. While they have been happy with the blocking improvement in recent weeks, they know some much tougher challenges loom over the season’s second half. If they can find a genuine difference-maker, that would be ideal. If that possibility doesn’t materialize, they will shift to finding another pass rusher or help at running back.

The Chicago Bears’ thinking is straightforward.

They love what Darrell Taylor has done since trading for him before the season. However, the team feels he is more of the perfect situational rusher than a true #2 guy across from Montez Sweat. Finding one on the market would be a great help. You can never have too many pass rushers. The bigger surprise is running back. D’Andre Swift seems to have settled down after a rough start and is playing some good football. This has less to do with him and is more about the depth behind him.

While the Chicago Bears brass love Khalil Herbert, they realize he just isn’t a good fit for Shane Waldron’s offense. Roschon Johnson is a good short-yardage back but lacks explosiveness. Travis Homer hasn’t been healthy most of the season. It feels like they are one injury away from being in a bad spot. Do they inquire about Chuba Hubbard? Alvin Kamara? Tank Bigsby? Antonio Gibson? All at least feel like possibilities if their respective teams decide to get a head start on 2025.

Herbert is a good player. We need OL and DL help a lot more than another RB. Travis Homer should not have made the team, and now they’re afraid we’re short on RB depth?

Good coaches find ways to use good players. Don’t spend more resources at RB, find a way to use what you have properly. Use your capital on the lines.

I would have to say the #1 and both #2s are off limits. We need to keep infusing young talent into this roster. Between Murray and Bates and Borom coming back we will be fine for this year on the O-line. Same with D line unless you can grab a cheap young interior run stopper with a future here. As for RB, Waldron needs to watch some tape of Herbert the last couple of years. At one point he led the league in yards/carry. He can be explosive and he actually got a little better last year as a pass… Read more »

I can’t say I’d be thrilled giving away draft capital for a RB rental when there is so much looming talent in the upcoming draft at RB. I’ve been bullish and will continue to emphasize the Bears should draft a RB within the first three rounds (ideally second) of next year’s draft with the current picks they own. That leaves a first and another second for DE and IOL. IDL needs more depth than starters with Gervon, Billings, Pickens, and Walker all returning. I’d love to see Taylor return and have him and Booker be our backups to Sweat and… Read more »

Still plenty of time until after the Washington game to get another player or two. Khalil and Roschon are not being used effectively at all by Shane. Shane does not appear to be even trying, it’s Swift or nobody. Getsy did better with them (and was it Foster?).

The Jags aren’t trading Tank Bigsby, he is now their #1. I think Etienne is the better option, two 1,000 yard seasons under his belt, would be a great #2 in this offense as he is fairly similar to Swift as far as what he can do on the field.
