It’s only been three weeks, but that is all the Chicago Bears fans have needed to acknowledge one reality. Their team is still terrible. There is no longer any argument that it’s the worst in the NFL. Every team in the league has played one close game this season. Chicago has not. Every one of their contests has ended in a double-digit loss, with Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium being the worst yet. Kansas City built a 41-0 lead before calling off the dogs in the second half, allowing the Bears to make it look more presentable with 10 pity points.
Nobody was fooled. It was by far one of the ugliest performances by a Bears team in years, right up there with the lowest point of the Marc Trestman era in 2014. It is no longer a question of whether the team will make changes when the season ends. It’s about how deep those changes will go. Quarterback Justin Fields is probably gone. Head coach Matt Eberflus might be the same, what with his 3-17 record. Even GM Ryan Poles may not survive at this rate.
There is one silver lining. Their loss, along with some results around the rest of the league, has now made the Bears a current favorite for the #1 pick in 2024.
The Chicago Bears could end up with two top-5 picks.
Currently, there are four teams that sit at 0-3 this season. One is the Bears, and another is the Carolina Panthers. Chicago, of course, holds their 1st round pick courtesy of the D.J. Moore trade. Their loss up in Seattle now gives the Bears two potential top-5 selections. Maybe even #1 and #2. That became possible when Arizona and Houston both won their respective games. The Cardinals beat Dallas, while the Texans thumped Jacksonville. Arizona holds both of those 1st round picks. Maybe predicted they would hold #1 and #2 next year.

Those odds are shifting in the Chicago Bears’ direction. Still, it’s hard to feel excited about this team. Nothing seems to have gone right for them over the past decade. It has been one giant organizational failure after another. It won’t change until they can finally secure a GM and head coach who know what they’re doing. Poles had the right idea of wanting to build through the draft. Sadly, his choice of head coach is proving a disaster. None of his picks are taking off, either.
Team president Kevin Warren has every reason to push George McCaskey and ownership to let him reset everything next off-season. The next regime could at least have the resources to finally build something.
After all the changes the Bears have made this off-season it’s really amazing that they actually look worse than they did last year. The offense displays little innovation and Fields look like a deer caught in your headlights.
the problem starts with the owners and they will not go anywhere.
Poles traded the #1 pick for a receiver. When was the last time a receiver went #1? Please don’t let him make any more decisions.
