Caleb Williams Unloaded Two More Ridiculous Throws Vs. Bears Defense

-

The Chicago Bears knew they were taking a calculated risk by pivoting away from Justin Fields to Caleb Williams this off-season. GM Ryan Poles felt it was the right play. Not only would it protect the team’s salary cap, but Williams was also a special talent. Poles felt he was the type of quarterback who could put a team on his back and win games. Much of that comes from his arm ability. Williams has an inventory of different throws that make him difficult for anybody to defense. The Bears defense is finding that out with each passing practice.

While Thursday was inconsistent for the offense overall, Williams still managed to make his mark not once but twice. The first came on a scramble to his left, where he twisted his body around and fired a pinpoint strike to Keenan Allen, who was diving out of bounds. Rest assured, not many QBs can do something like this.

Williams wasn’t done, though. He opted for a more traditional play from the pocket later in drills. Deep in the red zone, he fired a perfect strike to Velus Jones in the corner of the end zone. The defense never had a shot at it.

Caleb Williams’ talent is living up to the hype.

Everything is showing up: the arm strength, the accuracy, the mobility, and the poise. Nothing seems to rattle him. Keep in mind he’s been practicing almost exclusively against the starting defense since training camp started. He isn’t making these throws against backups and scrubs. It is the Bears’ loaded secondary. That should tell you a lot about his ability. All of it hasn’t been perfect. The defense is still winning most of the team periods, but the progress is evident. With time, Williams will start winning his share of the battles.

Bears fans should feel excited. These aren’t isolated plays. Caleb Williams is doing stuff like this every day. Teammates and coaches alike can’t say enough about his arm talent. Buzz is building even among the most pessimistic members of the Chicago beat. When you’re winning over guys like Dan Wiederer and Mark Potash, it might be time to take notice. Williams will get his first chance to shine in pads this weekend. Fans are certain to relish the opportunity to watch.

Excellent point Pooch…Its like when Lineman take up marshal arts in the off-season to work on hand and feet movements. Also couldn’t hurt to incorporate yoga to work on flexibility and muscle stretching.

When we see players doing things that WE haven’t seen before, we assume it’s never been done before, and what we are seeing is highly unusual. I’ve been watching women’s handball in the Olympics and watching the way they move, toss the ball (smaller than a football) around, catch, toss, throw and all of them leave their feet while throwing to score. None of the throws are the distance of a football field, but all of them are the distance of short to intermediary range throws. I’m sure Caleb Williams has an arsenal of throws, and I’m sure he’ll be… Read more »

What I want is a QB who can read and process defenses, audible, have touch on his passes, be able to throw to windows that haven’t developed yet and to the ones that have. Throw to wide open receivers when open. All of which hasn’t been done for quite a while.

The most important thing we are not seeing yet is real hits. These 11 on 11 drills don’t even have pads. Good to see CW throwing lots but he’s real safe right now, learning. So we can learn more from pads, and from pre-season games. I’ll be disappointed if CW doesn’t play one drive in Canton. He needs the reps and he’ll probably be held out of the last pre-season game. Give everyone a small taste in Canton, especially CW. Rome Odunze should play that first drive too. KA and DJ can wear street clothes. #1 O-Line should play that… Read more »
