The Chicago Bears found another heartbreaking way to lose this week, falling in overtime to the division-leading Minnesota Vikings. After an incredible comeback that included the league’s first successful onside kick recovery this season, the Bears managed to force overtime. But despite the late-game heroics, it wasn’t enough. In overtime, the Bears defense gave up a crucial drive to Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold after a quick three-and-out by the Bears offense, allowing Darnold to lead the Vikings down the field for the win.
Meanwhile, Caleb Williams had another great performance, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdown passes. His impressive showing also saw him break the franchise’s rookie passing record with six games still left in the season. Darnold, who has revitalized his career in Minnesota, continues to shine this season as well.
But after the game, during the Bears’ post-game press conference, Williams made a comment that sparked some attention. Though it didn’t seem like a direct shot at Darnold, his remarks came in response to a question about Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who had exchanged words with Williams at midfield following the game.
“They love him. Met him at the draft. When somebody comes over to you that’s having guys, having Sam Darnold even out there balling. He’s been a great coach so far I believe.”
I’m sure Caleb Williams didn’t intend it as a dig, but his comment definitely comes across as funny. That said, he does have a point—no one in the NFL expected the Vikings to be where they are now, especially after rookie QB JJ McCarthy went down earlier in the season. So while Caleb’s subtle shot is valid, credit still has to go to Sam Darnold. He’s having a Baker Mayfield-like resurgence, and that deserves recognition.

You put up 27 points against a number 1 defense you should win that game. The Bears defense let the team down yesterday. Flus should be let go and Brown elevated to interim HC. An audition for Brown and Washington to show what they got. It would be best for the team.
He mentioned that old teammates of his are playing on the Vikings and they love Kevin O’Connell. Sam Darnold was also a USC guy, although he was there before Caleb. That might be the “EVEN Sam Darnold”, like “Even another USC guy, Sam Darnold”.
STFU @Tred – We all know you are a Caleb hater and Fields lover! That kid was the only reason the Bears were even close to a win in that game. Does he need not to take that sack? Absolutely! So is the problem with having a rookie QB sometimes. He will learn from that, too. If Fields was our QB behind center in this game it would have been 42-7. Caleb put up some of the best numbers of any QB this season against the Vikings. Here is his stat line: Caleb – 340, 2 TD, 0 picks Here… Read more »
Granted most of Sam Darnold’s deeper throws were to receivers WIDE OPEN most of the game, where Caleb really had to work for his in tight windows. Caleb was the better QB today.
I still think that Thomas Brown is also handicapped with the offense. The reason is because he’s really just calling the plays from Waldron’s offense and that’s why everything looks so difficult still. The Vikings had so many plays that looked effortless. Pitch and catch to an open receiver. Waldron’s offense stinks, but it’s too late in the year to reinvent the wheel at this point.
@Krisanthony – say what you want. But he held the ball for 7 seconds on the sack that sealed the game. I was blaming those on Waldron, but Waldron’s gone.
He needs to stop doing that. Not just for the team’s sake, but for his own survival.
