Whether people want to admit it or not, the next Chicago Bears head coaching search will revolve around Caleb Williams. His success is paramount for this franchise. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league. It has been way too long for the Bears to adopt that modern thinking. Finding the right coach to cultivate Williams is a must. However, simply picking a guy with an offensive background isn’t some magic solution. It must be somebody who can mesh with Williams’ personality and get on the same page with him. That always seemed to be a problem with Matt Eberflus.
At his latest presser, the rookie was asked what his preferences are in a head coach. He stated he wants somebody willing to challenge him and his teammates, someone who can instill discipline in how the team operates, and someone who keeps his word in everything he does.
Caleb Williams remains forthright with his words.
In fact, he seems to echo the sentiment from the locker room. Adam Hoge of CHGO mentioned on his Hoge & Jahns podcast that many Bears players “crave” discipline. This has popped up at times during the season, with some, like Cole Kmet, mentioning how certain guys weren’t putting in the work necessary. For all the talk from Eberflus about working hard and having intensity, it seems as if he wasn’t quite able to convey the message to players as he needed to. Caleb Williams doesn’t lack a work ethic. However, he knows even great players need to get pushed if they’re going to achieve their full potential. It was true of Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, and others.
The Bears can’t just focus on an offensive mastermind. They must find somebody who is willing to be the adult in the room. Eberflus wasn’t up to that task. Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles must put their egos aside to find one.

@Dr. Steven Sallie Unfortunately for me, it is no longer the “holidays,” meaning your guy on here Barry cannot begin his day by consuming a baseball bat-sized pre-roll along with his morning espresso. And I absolutely cannot follow that up with several joyful rips of the good old trusty, reliable vape (either penjamin frankin or osama pen laden, depending on the direction the wind’s blowing) while listening to clients talk to each other on calls.
In other words, I unfortunately have no idea what you’re talking about.
Caleb isn’t whining or saying he needs this or that. He’s answering a question a reporter asked, and giving what I think is an accurate answer. You could take a poll of pretty much every football player at any level, and they all want basically the same things from their coaches. No bullshit, be consistent, and hold everyone on the team to account. Why do they all want those things? Because those are the things that pretty much every winning team has in common. No one cares how you get it done…strong D, basic offense, high powered offense, run heavy,… Read more »
@Barry In the quantum universe or world, time does not exist. And if Poles were a mere particle, he would exist in multiple places at the same time. I hope this clarifies all the ambiguities presented here.
Barry, I’d say it’s also a fair statement that the conditions surrounding CW were also a regression from the previous year. New coaches, fired coaches, new coaches again, a regressed Oline, a terribly regressed running game (which I understand JF provided approx 200 more rushing yards than CW had this year)… When most of us expected more immediate success from CW that was also under the assumption Poles wouldn’t completely shit the bed in roster changes on the offense. But u never once mention that CW broke Bears rookie records or that he had numerous 300 yard passingcgames, which was… Read more »
@Dr. Steven Sallie And patriotism. Don’t forget how patriotic these young men today are.
