Caleb Williams was the first to say he didn’t have a good game in the opener against Tennessee. While his decision-making was mostly fine, his accuracy was not. He missed a number of throws that led to the offense never finding any rhythm. It wasn’t the showing anyone wanted, but that didn’t mean Williams lacked investment in the game. Far from it. Constant camera shots from the sideline showed him cheering every big play by the defense and special teams. He was constantly encouraging offensive teammates, telling them they were still in it.
He also wasn’t afraid to do some trash talking. Cameras picked up on one such moment late in the game. Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons was shouting at him after a play, no doubt taking digs at the Bears’ lack of offensive success. Williams turned to him and only had one thing to say.
“Look at the fucking score.”
Caleb Williams knew how to go right for the throat.
Simmons and the rest of the Titans’ defensive front had a tremendous game. They were in Williams’ face all day. He was unimpressed with the rookie and said so after the game. Yet, the fact remains that he had no answer for the rebuttal. Despite his best efforts, the Titans still lost 24-17. Caleb Williams may not have engineered the comeback personally, but he played a small part in it and didn’t mind offering a reminder that all of Simmons’ efforts had led to precisely nothing. If the Bears quarterback is like this when he doesn’t have a great game, one can only imagine how much more insufferable he’ll be once the light goes on.
Talk does not impress me. Win. This week’s game should not be viewed as Caleb vs. Stroud. If it was, Stroud wins hands down – for now. Caleb needs to just be the point guard this week and try to keep it mistake free again. Just keep learning. This year really is not about this year.
As a rookie he didn’t get as rattled as the sophomore. I will say the offensive line didn’t look very good with the Titans mammoth 360lb tackle barreling in on most plays. Seemed like on every snap they were down to one which eliminated the Dline having to guess when the ball was going to be snapped. If Caleb would have hit a cpl of wide-open receivers and a few passes weren’t dropped things might have turned out differently with his performance. Definitely need to clean things up and hopefully his second game looks better.
Well, Dr. M, since you put it that way, then I shall forgive him for the profanity. Now that makes me feel better. I’m going to relax now, then, and watch two films, Deep Throat, pts. 1 & 2.
Let’s see now. I have been forced to go from Timothy Leary to Linda Lovelace. What a trip! I might fly to Houston for the game too.
@Dr. Sallie: I wouldn’t consider a conversation between two opposing football players on the field a ‘public’ discussion. Sure, it was caught on camera, but it’s not like he stood at the podium after being drafted and dropped an F-bomb into the mic.
That said, in 4 years when the Bears play the Titans again (or less if they happen to match up under the current 17th game schedule thing), this will probably all be water under the bridge, Caleb will be who he will become, for better or worse, and Simmons will be near retirement or retired.
Did he really have to use the “F” word in public to make his comeback point?”
