If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Carl Williams, it is that he’s not afraid to subtly express his opinion through social media. Caleb Williams’ father is a central part of the quarterback’s life. It has been well-known for months that the man makes his presence felt, particularly on the business side of things. Anything that has to do with his son isn’t taken lightly. That was first made clear when he retweeted a video on Twitter of a Washington Commanders coach taking accountability for his mistakes after the Hail Mary win over Chicago. Williams said it had nothing to do with head coach Matt Eberflus, who was under fire for refusing to do the same.
Most people with common sense knew otherwise.
It appears Mr. Williams may have done it again. He posted something on his Twitter feed that didn’t generate much buzz because it came on a Bears game day, but the implications of it are massive. It was an article detailing the trade of former head coach Jon Gruden from the Oakland Raiders to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. Maybe it’s jumping to conclusions, but this feels like it might be a hint at what the Chicago Bears have planned for their upcoming coaching search.
The Bears seem willing to swing big for Caleb Williams.
The timing of this feels interesting for two reasons. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported recently that team president Kevin Warren is hoping to make a “splash” at head coach. The goal is to excite the fanbase and maybe give the new stadium project a push. Not long after that, Jay Glazer revealed that teams have been calling Minnesota about the availability of head coach Kevin O’Connell, who enters the last year of his contract in 2025. This would indicate there is movement of some kind on the trade market.

There wouldn’t be a bigger splash to make for Chicago than trading for the next coach, be it O’Connell or somebody else. The Gruden trade involved two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks. It was the largest ever engineered in NFL history. There have been seven total since 1997. Almost all of them have led to the acquiring team making at least one deep playoff run. If the Bears aren’t confident in their ability to hire a prominent coach in the normal fashion, trading for one makes sense. Caleb Williams is worth the investment.

Hate to spend draft capital when the roster has 7 or 8 glaring holes. LG, RG, C, DT, DE, RB and S (if Brisker is done) need attention now. The attrition rate in this league will keep adding to these needs as we address the old ones … with the GM misfires making more Poles-holes to fill. Hope I live long enough to outlast mismanagement.
