Caleb Williams’ Father Appears To Take Direct Shot At Matt Eberflus

-

So, remember those concerns raised before the draft about the presence of Caleb Williams’ father, Carl Williams, and how he could become a nuisance for any organization that drafted the quarterback? It didn’t take the man long to validate those worries. The elder Williams doesn’t have a strong social media presence, but he does have a Twitter account that follows all of his son’s exploits. Earlier today, it retweeted a video of Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt lamenting how the team never should’ve been in the situation to throw a Hail Mary at the end.

Mr. Williams put two hashtags above it.

The timing of this can’t be a coincidence, given that head coach Matt Eberflus is under fire for his mistakes in Sunday’s loss and seemingly refuses to hold himself accountable for them. Williams spoke to Shane Riordan of 670 The Score shortly after, insisting it had nothing to do with Eberflus. However, the fact he deleted the tweet mere minutes after posting it suggests otherwise.

Caleb Williams’ relationship with Eberflus is becoming a question.

Before the season, there were grumblings in some circles that the quarterback wasn’t giving his head coach enough of his full attention or respect. A video clip from Hard Knocks illustrated this with Eberflus taking notes in a private meeting and Williams sitting with his arms crossed. People didn’t think much of it at the time. There were other clips where the quarterback jotted things down. However, recent events suggest there might be something going on between those two.

It is not necessarily a beef or tension. It is more like Caleb Williams has concerns about Eberflus’ competency. Two instances suggest this might be the case. One was on the final two plays in Washington, where Williams had to pull his head coach back from committing a penalty by walking onto the field. Then, it was his failure to call a timeout when it was clear Tyrique Stevenson wasn’t paying attention to the Hail Mary play. Secondly, there was this quote from his recent presser.

“OK teams, nobody leads. Good teams, coaches lead. The great teams, players lead.”

Downplaying the importance of the head coach like that might be telling. Williams won’t start any drama, but his father’s recent actions suggest there is some discontent.

I can also interpret that as a knock on Riverboat Ron, as well.

Fans have been calling out Eberflus. The media has been calling out Eberflus. The players have been calling out Eberflus. Why is it an issue at all that Carl might be calling out Eberflus?

Folks, your guy on here Barry called this — literally, exactly this — back before the draft.

It is Halloween night. I suppose elder Williams was disappointed too that Caleb was tarnished by losing his joyful diamond standing in the DC area, where they are likely to be headed someday. Flus, Shane, and Stevenson deserve any criticism they receive from people who know better. The elder thinks he is helping his son, but it might be counter-productive for him in some ways. We shall soon see how this plays out in the Cardinals’ game.
