Everybody who covers college football and the NFL draft has stated it’s their firm belief the Chicago Bears will take a quarterback with the #1 pick. While Justin Fields has done everything he can to keep the job, it hasn’t been enough. His contract is almost to a point where it will get way more expensive. Rather than force him to start over with a third offensive coordinator in four years, it is best to start over at the position. If they choose that course, most believe Caleb Williams of USC is the most obvious pick.
If that were the case, one would think the Bears would target an offensive coordinator who is equipped to get the most out of Williams. Their candidates thus far aren’t bad ones. Shane Waldron, Klint Kubiak, Liam Coen, and Greg Roman all have proven track records. However, college insider Bruce Feldman feels Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus aren’t looking at the guy who makes the most sense. He spoke on The Rich Eisen Show about the situation. In his mind, the hire should be obvious if Williams is the guy.
Kliff Kingsbury and Caleb Williams would be a bold move.
People will scoff at the idea because of how things ended for the coach in Arizona. That is understandable. However, he wouldn’t be coming here as a head coach. In reality, Kingsbury is a proven offensive mind at both the college at pro levels. He produced a top-20 offense three times between 2015 and 2018 while head coach at Texas Tech. He had the 6th-best offense in 2020 and 8th-best in 2021 while in Arizona. Even before that, he delivered the #1 offense in the entire country during his final year at Houston.
One common theme with Kingsbury is he gets the most from his quarterbacks. Case Keenum threw for over 5,600 yards and 48 touchdowns for the Cougars in 2011. Patrick Mahomes set every passing record at Texas Tech under his watch. Kyler Murray made two Pro Bowls. Care to know which two QBs Caleb Williams is most often compared to?

Murray and Mahomes.
His style of play fits the system Kingsbury has run during his career. If the Bears wanted to do everything necessary to make their young QB comfortable, then Feldman is correct. That is a phone call you should make.
Intriguing move if they go with CW. At first I wasn’t sold on a QB with #1 pick but I’m starting to warm up to the idea. I still question CW’s grit to be handed the keys to the franchise. Many alarm bells – going back to Utah game 2 seasons ago and ending with USC players passive aggressively dissing him after their bowl game. A lot of work ahead for Poles. Going to be fun to watch …
I think he is going to draft a QB at #1. If it were a weak QB class, he would trade down again. There is no reason to try to outsmart everyone when one of the top prospects is available. He has the worst quarterback in the division, who has had 38 starts. It’s highly unlikely Justin will make dramatic improvements. The only hard part is do you want to build a team with Justin as a bridge QB or fire away this year. Given the talent in this draft, it’s an easy decision.

Scooby… as a big Penix fan, I’d say the value at #9 might be a tad high. But I’d also say there are 5-7 QB needy teams in the top 13. And Penix is one of the consensus top 4 QBs. So if they like Penix u almost might have to pull the trigger at 9. U got 3 QB needy teams right behind us, in a row, starting at 11. I believe all 4 of the top QB’s are off the board in the first 13 picks.. and quite possibly in the first 10 (depending on how the off… Read more »
