Bears Rumored to Be Sniffing Around Cornerback Jimmy Smith

-

The Chicago Bears have made a number of interesting moves in their defensive secondary so far this offseason. They cut Prince Amukamara and allowed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to leave as a free agent. Thus far their only move at safety was to bring back Deon Bush on a one-year deal. Meanwhile at corner they’ve added CFL standout Tre Roberson and former 1st round pick Artie Burns. While there is lots of talent there, there isn’t a ton of experience. That could be why the team is still in the market for an older vet. Is Jimmy Smith an option?

That is certainly the rumor.

Now it’s very important to note that Incarcerated Bob has a rather uneven reputation when it comes to “inside” information. He’s had some hits here and there but also a lot of misses too. Ones he’s been accused of trying to cover up. That said, this would definitely make sense.

Jimmy Smith has ties to the Bears coaching staff

Smith turns 32 in July this season. He’s been a starter for the Baltimore Ravens since 2011, the same year Chuck Pagano was their defensive coordinator. That familiarity is likely something the Bears are hoping to exploit. Smith has only played two full seasons in his career, dealing with frequent injury problems. That said when he’s on the field he has always been an effective cover corner. Adding him would give Chicago a little more stability at the spot opposite Kyle Fuller.

Smith missed seven games last season with a knee injury. When he was on the field though he remained effective. Quarterbacks had just a 67.8 passer rating when throwing in his direction. So it’s not like he was a shell of his former self. The health risks are obvious but if the Bears can get him on the cheap, then it might be worthwhile in order to keep their secondary strong behind a reinvigorated pass rush.
