D’Andre Swift had solid numbers last season for the Chicago Bears, going over 1300 yards from scrimmage. However, he only averaged 3.6 per carry, showcasing a lack of creativity when the blocking isn’t perfect. That was probably one of the key reasons the Detroit Lions traded him a couple of years ago when Ben Johnson was offensive coordinator. Now, he is the head coach in Chicago. Some have already speculated that he might be looking for a way to move on from Swift again. However, to do that, he must have some sort of replacement lined up.
It appears the Bears might be in the process of finding one. News came out that they have a top 30 visit lined up with SMU running back Brashard Smith. Like Swift, he’s made his name as a serious speed threat with tremendous value as a pass-catcher. The crazy part is that until 2024, he spent his college career as a wide receiver. Coaches moved him to running back in hopes it might better utilize his talents. He responded with 1,332 rushing yards, 39 catches for 327 yards, and 18 touchdowns.
Many feel the kid is only scratching the surface of his potential.
The Bears may see Smith as an eventual D’Andre Swift successor.
Their skillsets are quite similar, for one. Smith has 4.39 speed and can be a problem in the open field. His receiver background also gives him significant matchup advantages against linebackers. The primary issue is his size. Though two inches taller than D’Andre Swift, Smith is only 194 lbs. That is thin for a running back. Swift is 216. The hope would be the Bears can get him on a nutrition plan that helps him add enough weight to better protect his body against NFL physicality. He also lacks the instincts and vision of a top running back, which isn’t a surprise due to his inexperience. Projections likely have him going somewhere in the 4th or 5th rounds. Chicago only has one pick in that range. This means he’s higher on their board or they feel they have a good shot to land him in the 5th. If they do, Swift’s clock will start ticking louder.

Seems to get caught from behind a lot for a guy that runs 4.39. There’s speed and there’s football speed
As @David said, it’s likely that Poles will do some moving around the draft board, and will probably end up with a few more late round picks, so Smith could be an option 5th or 6th if he lasts. We’ll see.
The former WR is explosive and has breakaway speed at 4.39 but is a liability on short yardage without size and power. He also is not much of a pass blocker. Still, he has good instincts and hasn’t had the wear or tear like other backs.
Possible 5th round target.
5th round pick at best. Gadget back/slot receiver type.
@David I upvoted you. Somebody devious downvoted you. I think I know who the Hyena was.
