Bears Mailbag -- What's Matt Nagy's Ceiling As Head Coach?

We’re 11 days away from Chicago Bears football! I can’t believe I’m typing those words in the year of a pandemic, but having football back is going to be wonderful.

Of course, we still don’t know who will line up at quarterback at Ford Field in Week 1. By all accounts, the quarterback competition between Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles has been relatively even, with Foles slightly ahead. But it appears Matt Nagy and the Bears’ coaching staff will make a decision this weekend, and announce it by Wednesday of next week.

Consistently mediocre QB play (not super high highs and super low lows) can get this team to 10-11 wins. The roster, overall, is strong, and Matt Nagy is an exceptional leader. This team's ceiling is absolutely that of a Super Bowl contender under Nagy if the QB doesn't suck.

I don't think it's going to happen. That would probably send mixed signals to David Montgomery, even though Monty is (and should be) the clear-cut RB1. Plus, Fournette is reportedly looking for a power-running scheme to play in. That's not the Bears' run scheme.

I think the context of the 5-11 record would need to be examined. But if they decide to fire people, it'd be the whole regime. Ryan Pace, Matt Nagy and the rest of the crew are tied at the hip.

I like Pierce a lot, but I'm not sure he's ready to shoulder the load, even though he can certainly contribute. I'd expect it to be a combination of Nall and Cohen at that point. But, it seems like Monty might not miss much actual game time.

I would. But the Bears won't. I believe they view them as a packaged deal at this point.

I think the Bears are just being cautious and making sure he is good to go for Week 1. They know what he can do, and Matt Nagy has repeatedly said he isn't worried about Hicks. So if Nagy isn't worried, we shouldn't be worried.

I think it's going to depend on the context of the season. If every major player gets injured or misses time due to Covid-19, then the season was lost due to truly exigent circumstances out of the team's control. In that case, a 7-9 record might be understandable.

Kmet is going to have a pretty significant role on offense this season. By all accounts, he and Jimmy Graham have been quite the tandem in practice. That's great news for an offense that relies heavily on high-performing TEs.
