Bears Mailbag -- What If Trubisky Wins Competition and Succeeds In 2020?

The 2020 NFL Draft kicks off this Thursday (my birthday!) and it’ll be the first live sports-related event (that truly matters) since COVID-19 shut down the world about a month ago.

And with nothing else to really do on my birthday (even without a Chicago Bears first round pick to wait impatiently for), I’m looking forward to the draft. If he puts everything together, then we shouldn't see traits of the old Trubisky. If he is still showing poor processing skills, which he likely will, then he should not be re-signed. Why commit big money to an unreliable QB?

I think the starting TE spot is Graham's to lose. As far as draft TEs go, I like Hopkins, Kmet, and Harrison Bryant as prospects, but not necessarily enough to draft them in the second round.

If they draft a CB first, it's because it's the best player available on their board, not due to need. Teams get in trouble drafting that way.

I don't think I can confidently say anything other than Kicker and Punter. Ryan Pace has shown he will always draft what he thinks is the BPA, no matter what.

I do, only because he’s somewhat cheap, won’t gain a ton of space, and is still a second round pick.

Miller's need for another shoulder surgery does worry me, but he is an excellent route runner and exceptional at getting open. His role is large, his QB just couldn't hit him last year.

Honestly, no. I can *see* an argument for Hopkins or Kmet, but I can just as easily see the counterpoint that pushes them to the 3rd round or later.

Would I be surprised if the Bears took a QB in the second round? Not necessarily, depending on how the board falls. Would I be surprised if they took Hurts in particular? Yes. He is not worth a second-round pick, IMO.

My understanding is the Bears have financial hurdles to work through before they can finalize the extension. Namely, some contract restructures. But I think the extension itself is a given, at this point.
