Bears Legend Reveals Shocking Stance On The Justin Fields Situation

-

Opinions vary wildly when it comes to what the Chicago Bears should do with Justin Fields. One constant in the debate that is current and former players agree the team must keep him another year, utilizing their draft picks to further build around him. They believe he showed enough towards the end of this season to justify more time, hopefully with a far better offensive coordinator guiding the way. However, at least one notable name didn’t join that bandwagon. That is Brian Urlacher.

One would think the Hall of Fame linebacker would be in favor of keeping Fields. He said many times over the years he wished the Bears had kept Kyle Orton as the starting quarterback rather than chase a superior talent. He felt the team was good enough to win with Orton, who was an excellent leader and teammate. Staying the course with a guy the locker room loves feels like an Urlacher staple.

Not this time. He appeared on The Zach Gelb Show for CBS Sports Radio to discuss the Bears’ issue. There is no struggling with this decision for him. Take Caleb Williams.

Urlacher seems to have seen enough of Justin Fields.

His words ring true. If you’re still asking whether a quarterback is “the guy” after year three, he probably isn’t the guy. Fields plays a brand of football that someone like Urlacher wouldn’t likey. While he’s exciting to watch at times, he’s inefficient and doesn’t do the best job protecting the football. It’s hard to win games that way. The situation wasn’t perfect, but Fields had three seasons to show he was the real deal. He didn’t get it done. There are still too many holes in his game as a passer to justify passing on a quarterback at #1 overall for the second year in a row.

Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.

This is why Urlacher remains somebody worth listening to. He may not be an offensive guy, but he’s not stupid. He understood Jay Cutler wasn’t great for the locker room shortly after he arrived in 2009. He knew the Nick Foles trade would do more harm than good for the Bears in 2020. That proved true. Now he is certain the Justin Fields experiment is over. Whether it’s Williams or somebody else, they have to find a new quarterback. It might be time to heed his words.

And when it comes to beating Green Bay, if the solution is having a great QB and better coaching, the things everyone says Green Bay already has, how do you suppose the Bears will overcome being worse than the Packers at probably 2/3 of the other positions, and with worse depth? Do you just hope they have a bad day or decide to rest their best players?

@amv74 That Pat Mahomes led offense put up 17 points and struggled all day. His longest completion was caught by receiver when it literally fell on him, kind of like the catch Mooney didn’t make in Cleveland, and his tight end was bailing him out all day. Pat Mahomes is a great QB, but when a great QB’s team wins, it’s not always because of that QB, and that was the case this past Sunday. That was a defensive win and an offense that didn’t make any big mistakes to cost them. And you know for a fact that is… Read more »

Arnie last time I played QB in organized football was probably 8th grade. For the record. I am not dismissing the rest of team at all. In fact, I will say Williams would probably have more talent than most first overall picks plus cap room plus a good amount of prime pick to keep adding. Not sure you make a point to help you, it helps me citing a super with the goat beating the heir to his throne. In fact, bucs won because chiefs line was really banged up and mahomes was injured and couldn’t move. I don’t think… Read more »

@amv74 Just curious, but did you play quarterback at some point in your life? I’m not asking because that makes you more or less qualified, or your opinion more or less valid, but usually, it’s only a small segment of QB’s who completely dismiss the rest of the roster on a football team. For example, in your mind, I assume, you see the 2020/2021 Super Bowl that the Buccaneers won as “Brady beating Mahomes”, when in reality, Brady was decent, but it was a dominate defensive line that beat the Chiefs with Pat Mahomes, along with a piss poor offensive… Read more »
