Justin Fields remains a divisive topic among Chicago Bears fans. Many feel he’s shown more than enough over the past 12 months to prove he isn’t true franchise quarterback material. He remains too inconsistent and too reckless with the football. Others believe he is a victim of terrible coaching by Matt Eberflus and his staff. Get him somebody competent, and he can finally show what he is capable of. His breakout passing performance against Denver proves he still has the capability.
What isn’t clear is what the important decision-makers inside Halas Hall think. They haven’t offered any comments on Fields’ status. That is unlikely to change during the season. However, it doesn’t mean there aren’t whispers about what will likely happen. Bill Zimmerman of Windy City Gridiron has strong connections around the organization. He reached out to ask about what the Bears’ plans might be. One thing was made abundantly clear. If the team ends up with the #1 overall pick next April, there is no way Fields will be the quarterback in 2024.
Justin Fields missed his opportunity.
If he had performed better through the first month of 2023, there is a strong possibility the narrative would be different now. He failed to step up against Green Bay again. He threw a backbreaking pick-six in Week 2 against the Buccaneers. Kansas City rendered him irrelevant. Then, when he finally put together a career-best game last Sunday, he ruined it with two brutal turnovers in the 4th quarter. Fields is now 5-23 as a starter in the NFL. For context, David Carr won eight of his first 28 starts with the expansion Houston Texans.
Justin Fields has 26 interceptions and 32 fumbles. He’s taken 108 sacks. These numbers reflect a player that lacks efficiency in every category. It’s hard to win games with somebody like that, let alone championships. As of this moment, the Bears have a 57% chance of landing the #1 pick in the 2024 draft. Those odds go up if they lose on Thursday night in Washington. If Caleb Williams goes pro, as many expect, the decision appears set in stone. Fields will likely be traded during the off-season. His playing well would only serve the Bears’ interests in driving up the asking price.
