Mitch Trubisky will forever have a complicated legacy among Chicago Bears fans. On the one hand, he’s the first QB to reach a Pro Bowl since 1985. He’s one of the select few quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for six touchdowns in a game. Also, he is the only Bears QB to throw for 300 yards in a playoff game. At the same time, he was a #2 overall pick who badly underplayed his draft slot. He also failed to secure a starting job elsewhere after leaving Chicago.
Trubisky isn’t the worst quarterback in Bears history by a wide margin. However, he might be the most disappointing. This is why fans probably continue to troll him even with his Chicago career concluded. Even on his wedding day. Trubisky announced that he had married his longtime girlfriend Hillary Gallagher. A terrific bit of news for him. Some people though couldn’t resist some jabs at him in the process.

Nick Foles came in midway through the ceremony. Then the pastor decided Mitch was still the better option and he finished it out. #Bears https://t.co/kzzM6xDuBB

One thing is for sure.
The guy certainly punched above his weight class. Mrs. Trubisky is a lovely, young woman. No doubt a lot of the barbs were directed at him out of jealousy more than anything. A reminder that even average NFL quarterbacks are way more successful than most people. Not that he has to care about what people say these days. For all his setbacks on the field, he’s been crushing it off the field.
The big question is whether the Bears actually got better after his departure. They certainly hope so since the odds of him playing at all in 2021 are remote.
Mitch Trubisky exit puts the pressure squarely on Matt Nagy
For literal years, fans were divided on who the real problem was with the Bears’ underachieving offense. Many blamed Trubisky while others felt the head coach and his system were the bigger issues. Nagy himself made his thoughts clear on this, benching the young quarterback when he finally got an opportunity early in 2020. However, when Nick Foles floundered he had no choice but to reverse the decision.
Now he finally has total freedom and a completely revamped quarterback room. Out goes Mitch Trubisky and in comes Andy Dalton and Justin Fields. Nagy is so confident that the QB was the primary issue that he even declared he would resume play calling duties. A bold decision to be sure. He better hope things look better than they did most of the past two seasons. Otherwise, the organization may have some decisions to make about his status with the team.
Trubisky? His future is less certain.
He signed a one-year deal in Buffalo to be a backup to Josh Allen. While he still harbors a desire to start in the NFL, it isn’t clear where he might get that opportunity. It feels like barring a twist of fate, he could be headed for a new phase of his career. That of a journeyman backup. Something that has happened to former high draft picks many ties in the past. Well, at least he’ll have a wife to help him along the way.
