Bears Defense Goes Bonkers on the Poor Bills in Buffalo

-

People will find a way to hound Mitch Trubisky for a quiet game or some other stupid thing. The fact of the matter is he didn’t have to do anything and made one bad throw. That’s about it. This game belonged to Jordan Howard with two touchdowns but even more so to the Chicago Bears defense. They had little mercy for the poor Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Keep in mind this unit was still playing without its best player. Khalil Mack spent a second-straight week on the sideline nursing his injured ankle. It turned out find last week against the Jets as the defense allowed just 10 points. Could it be more of the same against Buffalo? Yes indeed. If anything they played even better.

To be fair, Buffalo knew they were in the crosshairs from the start, having to play third-string quarterback Nathan Peterman with both Josh Allen and Derek Anderson sidelined by injuries. Still, the Bears had business to take care of and it started early thanks to the always opportunistic Eddie Jackson.

Bears defense only seemed to ratchet up the pressure after that

Per usual, it’s those types of plays that get them going. Peterman barely had time to think most of the game. Despite not being sacked a lot, he was pressured constantly. This allowed the secondary to make several big plays. None more so than Kyle Fuller. He brought Christmas early this year, being involved on not one but three interceptions by the Bears defense.

It started with Adrian Amos. Fuller met newly-signed receiver Terrell Pryor over the middle and knocked the ball out of his hands. It bounced into the waiting arms of Amos who made it his second career interception. On the very next series, Fuller struck again. This time he deflected a pass intended for Zay Jones that fluttered into the hands of Leonard Floyd who promptly ran it in for a touchdown.

Fun as that was, Fuller wasn’t satisfied. Later in the 3rd quarter, he got in on the action himself with a diving interception.

It was vintage Bears defense all afternoon. Buffalo threw 49 times for just 189 yards and three interceptions. They ran for 97 yards but a huge chunk of that came on Peterman scrambles. Lesean McCoy had 10 yards on 10 carries. Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan combined for 25 tackles. The defense had four sacks including ones from youngsters like Isaiah Irving and Roy Robertson-Harris.

To think they’re about to get Mack back healthy is a scary thought.
