Austin Booker Is Already Blowing Away Bears Coaching Staff

-

While Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze will carry the burden of expectations for this latest Chicago Bears draft class, there is another with pressure on him as well. That is Austin Booker. Though the Kansas alum is only a 5th round pick, he was also the only notable addition the Bears have made at the edge rusher position. Unless that changes, it means they will be leaning on him a lot to pick up the slack across from Montez Sweat. One would think this would be a bit overwhelming for the rookie.

Defensive coordinator Eric Washington was quick to dispel that notion. During a segment of the latest episode of 1920 Football Drive, Washington singled out Booker as somebody who impressed right away. It isn’t solely because of his ability, too. They’ve noticed he is far more assertive than somebody of his age. He doesn’t operate with a meek “Yes, sir” mentality around people. Booker acts as if he belongs on that field and puts in the necessary work and effort to prove as much.

Austin Booker is out to prove something.

He’s had a chip on his shoulder for years now. Don’t forget he spent two years on the bench at Minnesota, which is the reason he chose to transfer to Kansas in 2023. When he finally got playing time, he delivered with eight sacks and 12 tackles for a loss. Many feel he should’ve stayed in school. Doing so likely would’ve seen him go much higher in the 2025 draft after another strong season. Instead, Booker decided to go pro early. Chicago believes they may have been on the receiving end of some good fortune in that regard.

The rookie lands in a terrific situation. He is surrounded by a proven coaching staff tailor-made for his ability. Washington is a widely renowned defensive line specialist. Head coach Matt Eberflus has experience developing young players going back years. If Austin Booker follows their instructions, he could become a quality pass rusher for several years to come. Attitude isn’t the problem. His only obstacle is expanding his arsenal of moves and learning the craft of being in the NFL.

Ryan Poles is still the Bears’ GM — the man in charge, sitting at the desk, where “the buck stops. . .”

Right?

Gena, Always looking to blame something on Poles. God forbid, if the Bears win a Super Bowl under his watch. I don’t think you’ll know what to do then.. As far as Booker, why does it matter who identified ? If you knew anything about good bureaucracies, you would know that it’s always a team effort. But when something is wrong, blame usually goes to the main guy, kinda like in politics.

“Another edge” ?

Didn’t Ryan Poles solve that issue years ago with his selection of Dominique Robinson?

Have some confidence in Poles’ ability to identify: NFL talent, proficiency and value.

[Maybe Ian Cunningham was the man behind the Austin Booker selection — because it was a good one.]
