A couple of weeks ago, two prominent NFL insiders revealed that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had interest in the Chicago Bears head coaching job this off-season. He is likely to do so again if Matt Eberflus is fired at the end of the year as expected. Whether that holds true after watching the team implode lately remains to be seen. However, it is reasonable to assume Johnson won’t be the only coach who is interested in the Bears job. There is at least one more name that just popped up.
James Palmer of NFL Network believes Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is angling to get another head coaching gig after this season. His ongoing success with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels should give him great odds of doing so. Palmer thinks Kingsbury has circled the Bears job.
Kingsbury wanting the Chicago Bears job is hardly a surprise.
He knows quarterback Caleb Williams. They have a good relationship since their year together at USC in 2023. The coach knows exactly what the Bears’ #1 overall pick is capable of and how to get more out of him. Kingsbury also had head coaching experience. He held the job at Texas Tech and then with the Arizona Cardinals, taking them to the playoffs in 2021. He’s still only 45 years old, so there would be a chance for him and Williams to have a long, productive partnership. The big question would be whether he can find the right defensive coordinator to complement his offense.
Would the Chicago Bears entertain this idea? They’ve typically avoided coaches with “big” personalities. However, if the goal is to help Williams and keep him happy, this might be the one move that can guarantee that. It will be interesting to see if GM Ryan Poles ends up making that decision or if they hire somebody else.

Any offensive head coach bringing in Robert Saleh would flip the switch on this team. Saleh getting fired from the Jets was excellent. He was being tortured by Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett.
Coaches who have failed once, tend to understand what is needed to be successful. While they may have big personalities, the need to succeed allows them to come out with other accomplished, but big personalities.
Steve Spagnola is happy in Kansas City with Andy Reid, he’s won more Super Bowls being second in command than first. Harbaugh (Jim) thinks that Jesse Minter is going to be in demand, but I don’t know if Kingsbury could exist with a young defensive coach..
@batteredup … You nailed the overarching issue: “…None of the McCaskeys have the brains to get it done. 40+ years of McCaskey failure proves that.”
‘Nuff said!
Saw a story the other day saying Flus was uncomfortable with KK’s “strong personality,” according to “an inside source.” The source got the vibe that Flus feared KK would be a threat to take his job so he went with the less threatening Shane Waldron, whom DJ Moore said “was too nice of a guy.” It all adds up. Now the big question is, does Poles have the football acumen to recognize that KK could do for Caleb what he’s done for Jayden Daniels. With the OL he put around our franchise QB I’m concerned he’ll fail again. We know… Read more »
The good news is that if these reports are true, there’s considerable interest in the Bears HC job, despite the McCaskey’s not great reputation. But as of now, we really don’t know anything. In the crazily unlikely event that the Bears win out, all of this is meaningless. 0-8 the rest of the way will start a major purge. Results between those two (most likely) are more of a gray area.
