A couple of weeks ago, two prominent NFL insiders revealed that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had interest in the Chicago Bears head coaching job this off-season. He is likely to do so again if Matt Eberflus is fired at the end of the year as expected. Whether that holds true after watching the team implode lately remains to be seen. However, it is reasonable to assume Johnson won’t be the only coach who is interested in the Bears job. There is at least one more name that just popped up.
James Palmer of NFL Network believes Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is angling to get another head coaching gig after this season. His ongoing success with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels should give him great odds of doing so. Palmer thinks Kingsbury has circled the Bears job.
Kingsbury wanting the Chicago Bears job is hardly a surprise.
He knows quarterback Caleb Williams. They have a good relationship since their year together at USC in 2023. The coach knows exactly what the Bears’ #1 overall pick is capable of and how to get more out of him. Kingsbury also had head coaching experience. He held the job at Texas Tech and then with the Arizona Cardinals, taking them to the playoffs in 2021. He’s still only 45 years old, so there would be a chance for him and Williams to have a long, productive partnership. The big question would be whether he can find the right defensive coordinator to complement his offense.
Would the Chicago Bears entertain this idea? They’ve typically avoided coaches with “big” personalities. However, if the goal is to help Williams and keep him happy, this might be the one move that can guarantee that. It will be interesting to see if GM Ryan Poles ends up making that decision or if they hire somebody else.

The good news is that if these reports are true, there’s considerable interest in the Bears HC job, despite the McCaskey’s not great reputation. But as of now, we really don’t know anything. In the crazily unlikely event that the Bears win out, all of this is meaningless. 0-8 the rest of the way will start a major purge. Results between those two (most likely) are more of a gray area.
Benny and Kliff are my current #1 and #2. Those of you that wanted nothing to do with Kliff earlier this year, you know who you are. Kliff had some success when he was in Arizona. Kyler was an arrogant, selfish db that, as talented as he is, made things harder for his entire team with his terrible attitude. His injury completely changed his mindset and behavior, he’s a different player. Some of that may very well be coaching, but I’m putting my money on him being humbled and that experience carrying over into what we’re seeing now, he’s finally… Read more »
There’s a lot of eggs in that CW basket. Pretty much all of them. Bringing Kingsbury in as HC is a no-brainer (with Caleb’s approval of course). Let the qb choose, management has proven to be not so good at it.
I feel like Kingsbury already had a crack at HC where he got to have a QB of his choosing. As I recall that didn’t go well or last long.
The concern should not be his “big personality” (which I’ve never especially noticed anyway), but rather his really crappy results with Arizona, and the dramatic improvement in Kyler Murray’s performance and seemingly, attitude/work ethic AFTER Kingsbury got canned and replaced by a defensive minded head coach. It doesn’t much matter how successful he is with Jayden Daniels, being an OC with that as your only focus is dramatically different than being a head coach. Some can make the transition and take on all of the extra responsibilities of being in the big chair, but far more cannot. At least historically,… Read more »
