Aaron Rodgers Season May Already Be Over. And In Horribly Fitting Fashion

-

By far, the biggest event of the 2023 off-season came when the Green Bay Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. It marked the first time the future Hall of Famer would wear the uniform of a different organization in 18 years. Expectations were high for the Jets. They have a great defense, strong running game, and a budding superstar receiver in Garrett Wilson. The one concern was their porous offensive line, but it was felt Rodgers could navigate that problem with his veteran experience.

It appears they were mistaken. On a beautiful Monday night at MetLife Stadium, the dreams of Jets fans may have come crashing down before they ever had a chance to take flight. On the fourth offensive play of the game, Rodgers was sacked. He stayed down on the turf. It became clear right away that he was injured. Eventually, he was taken to the sideline and taken to the locker room. The team declared him out before the quarter was over. Initial reactions from medical experts seem to echo the same fear.

An Achilles injury.

What makes this horribly poetic? The man responsible for the play was Leonard Floyd, former Chicago Bears 1st round pick.

The football world now holds its breath for Aaron Rodgers.

It is hoped the injury is nothing more than a bad ankle sprain. That would mean he can still return this season. If it’s an Achilles or Lisfranc issue, then his season is over. It would mark the second time he’s suffered a serious injury at the hands of a former Bears 1st round pick. The first came from Shea McClellin in 2013 when he broke his collarbone. This one would be worse. It would also be a downright eerie connection to Brett Favre. He, too, suffered an injury during his lone season with the Jets in 2008 that sank their playoff hopes.

An MRI is almost certainly coming for Aaron Rodgers. That will determine the extent of the damage to his ankle and foot. Such information won’t be available until the following day. Yet Pro Football Doc is usually accurate with his assessments. So, him mentioning Achilles was a bad sign. If there is one silver lining to this, Rodgers’ exit for the season would rob the Packers of the 1st round pick they hoped for in the trade. The quarterback needed to play 65% of his snaps this season to make that happen.
