The rumor has been circulating for a couple days that the University of North Carolina football program would be switching to Jordan Brand. It wasn’t official, of course, until Michael Jordan said so.
Well, he announced it himself during halftime of the basketball game against arch-rival Duke.
Michael Jordan receives applause everywhere he goes but this was different . The “Dean Dome” was shaking when he walked out dressed in Jordan Brand UNC football gear.
He spoke shortly about his love for the state of North Carolina and anything sports related to the state. Jordan also gave praise to Head Football Coach Larry Fedora and says he likes the direction they’re going.
He also had a hiccup in saying that “the ceiling is the roof” for UNC. Oops. Everyone makes mistakes. Even Michael Jordan. He was most likely caught up in the moment.
If you’re not a person who follows sports uniforms, you’re wondering what a basketball brand has to do with football. Jordan isn’t just shoes but training and lifestyle apparel as well.
UNC isn’t even the first school to get the Jumpman treatment. The University of Michigan had that honor last season. They even had alum and Jordan ambassador Derek Jeter on board with the school.
It was only a matter of time until this union happened, but I doubt Jordan cared who the coach was. The uniforms and vote of confidence are all recruiting tactics, but still a great move for all involved.
Watch Jordan’s entrance and speech here.
Jumpman, Jumpman, Jumpman…
