The Chicago Bears appear poised to whittle down their list of candidates for the next head coach this coming week. People have speculated and debated for months about who it will be. Everybody has their opinions. The bottom line is they have to do better than Matt Eberflus. Otherwise, many people will be losing their jobs a couple of years from now. On the eve of such a momentous decision, it is often interesting to hear the perspective of players. Once upon a time, guys would never make their feelings known publicly. However, the social media age has changed that. Jaquan Brisker proved it on Sunday.
Chicago’s safety was chomping at the bit, watching other teams in the playoffs and recognizing that the Bears should be there, too. He’s eager to bring the city a winner after what happened this season, both with the losing record and his unfortunate bout with a concussion. The coaching situation matters to him as much as anybody, with the prospect of a contract extension at stake in 2025. He was asked by a fan who he’d prefer as the new coach. In a surprising turn, Brisker didn’t beat around the bush.
If it were him, it’d be an offensive guy that can pair with Caleb Williams.

If you have a quarterback you believe has a chance to be great, you need to pair him with a head coach who can get the most out of him. Brisker hasn’t been shy with his praise for Williams all season. He believes the #1 overall pick has superstar capability. As much as he may like a defensive coach who will cater to that side of the ball, that just isn’t how teams win these days. Each of the last five Super Bowl champions was a quarterback paired with an offensive head coach. Like it or not, the only time the Bears made the playoffs in the past decade was a quarterback paired with an offensive head coach.

Maximizing the QB is the easiest way to reach the promised land in this league. Jaquan Brisker understands this as well as anybody. Finding a head coach who meshes with Williams is paramount. Maybe it’s Ben Johnson. Perhaps it’s Mike McCarthy or Todd Monken. Either way, it’s time for the Bears to lean into a trend that has dominated the NFL for decades now. It will be interesting to see his reaction once the decision is finally made at some point in the next week or so.

I just want a HC who can build a staff that develops young players at all positions, holds everyone accountable to a high standard, and can out think the opposition on Sundays, and not just on paper or in practices.
Having a good eye for offensive line talent, so we can bolster our weakness there, would be a bonus.
I don’t care if he’s offensive. defensive, or from a special teams background. Give us a coach who can put it all in place and win.
Fact: Good offensive head coaches stay. Good defensive head coaches stay. Good offensive coordinators get poached. Bad offensive coordinators get fired. Good defensive coordinator stay longer (because of the same fear everyone has, but even when they leave, good head coaches are good because they are SMART, not because they are pretty. @Unluckyirishman76 I think we’re in the same camp…I want the best HC, and don’t particularly care what side of the ball he comes from. I would also prefer that the head coach not call plays for the simple fact there is not enough time in the day, so something is getting shortchanged along the way and given how few playcalling headcoaches you see actually winning Super Bowls, I think it’s safe to conclude that lack of attention to certain details will cost you games. @Unluckyirishman76 I think you are watching SMART people. The DC HC you are watching was smart enough to sign off on Kliff Kingsbury. If you recall, another DC HC on the Chicago Bears had an opportunity to sign off on Kingsbury too, but probably was scared that Kingsbury would be a d*ck to him. The other ST HC was smart enough to fire a successful OC (actually, let Greg Roman’s contract expire without renewal), and search through 15 candidates and 21 interviews to find his OC (from college).
