Ryan Poles Revealed What He’s Looking For In Next Bears Coach

-

To this point, all indications are that Ryan Poles will remain the Chicago Bears’ GM next season. Maybe that changes, but the fact that he’s still doing public interviews this close to Black Monday suggests the organization plans to keep him. That means what Kevin Warren said is true. Poles will lead the upcoming search for a new head coach. Plenty of Bears fans are not happy with this. They feel the GM hasn’t earned the right to get this opportunity, especially after his first choice proved such a fiasco.

Then again, it’s not surprising. The McCaskey family kept Ryan Pace despite winning only 14 games in his first three seasons. There was no reason to think they wouldn’t afford the same opportunity to Poles. That leaves only one question. What is he looking for in the next head coach to finally get this team over the hump? Poles spoke with Jeff Joniak on ESPN 1000 about the state of the franchise as the season draws to a close. He was asked about his criteria for the next coach. He made one thing clear.

Background doesn’t matter. He wants somebody who can finally give the Bears a competitive edge on Sundays.

Ryan Poles clearly has Eberflus’ blunders in the back of his mind.

The former coach basically torpedoed the Bears’ season because of constant mismanagement in end-of-game situations. He never seemed prepared for the big moments, and by extension, neither were the players. It was the Hail Mary in Washington, the blocked field goal against Green Bay, the 3rd and long breakdowns against Minnesota, and the timeout debacle in Detroit. If the Bears had a head coach who could keep his nerve and make the right decisions in those situations, they might win all of those games.

Obviously, the concern is whether Ryan Poles knows how to identify that type of coach. He signed off on hiring Eberflus. If the GM couldn’t determine whether he had the necessary chops for the job, there is no reason to think he suddenly has it figured out this time around. The only hope is that Kevin Warren’s connections will put the Bears in contact with a better crop of candidates.

Rumors are flying around and Erik is trying to create melodrama for daytime TV. Joe Brady has also been requested for an interview, Damar us Walker likes Vrabel, and Erik is declaring that George doesn’t care, Kevin’s got his hands dirty and Ryan has one foot out the door with the other one on the throne. Talk about Twister. Ryan’s one big mistake in 3 years is not firing Getsy after 6 games (like the Raiders did), not firing Eberflus after one year and getting this “real coach” interview process started year and a half ago. 1) A young offensive… Read more »

@Dr. Melhus A major argument for an offensive head coach, rather than a defensive one is: stability. While planty of defensive head coaches have created stable organizations and remained in place for years (Belichick, Carroll, Landry), all of them have known and studied offenses. When Belichick says “do your job” it applies to both offense and defense. Maintaining rush lane discipline and route running discipline. But if the Bears begin establishing offensive cohesiveness and continuity with an offensive coordinator, that coordinator is only going to last a year or two before being offered a head coaching job. Other than switching… Read more »

So far, two descriptions of what the Bears are looking for have been are “leader of men,” and “cool under fire.” They may find a fiery motivator on one side, but I hope that doesn’t seal the deal. The head coach needs to be both organized and clear about how to get the organization effective and cohesive. Other aspects will fall into place, when the organization begins to function. Too many times, they are hiring people who assume someone on the other side is “doing their job,” but not really know what the job is. Offense has always been more… Read more »

Some people are suggesting Kevin Warren may be better suited to choose the next head coach and not Ryan Poles but the fact is Warren is more of an organizational guy than a hands-on player personal type. Poles will do a fine job and Warren will support him.
