The Chicago Bears have begun their research on head coach candidates. In truth, they’ve been doing that for some time, realizing Matt Eberflus wasn’t the guy they needed to get over the hump. GM Ryan Poles and team president Kevin Warren appear focused on two potential courses of action. They either want to land a premier offensive mind who can maximize quarterback Caleb Williams, or they want a tough, disciplined leader who has previous head coaching experience. That is why the initial list of names involves Ben Johnson, Joe Brady, Mike Vrabel, and Brian Flores.
No name has the attention of Bears fans more than Johnson. They’ve watched him work magic for three years in Detroit, rescuing Jared Goff’s career and turning the Lions into a powerhouse. It is little wonder he’s the hottest ticket in town. Since quarterbacks came to the forefront of team success, young offensive hotshot coaches were always going to become the most in-demand. There have been rumors swirling between Johnson and Chicago for weeks. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the interest between the two sides remains stronger than ever.
Yeah, Kliff Kingsbury is a name that keeps coming up in Chicago, especially because of his previous relationship with Williams at USC. I still expect the Bears to take a run at Johnson, and it’s possible they could get him. I believe Johnson will be a hot candidate, but Williams should be a draw for any creative offensive mind — including any who might be inclined to join a potential Vrabel staff there.
Ben Johnson wants a lot of money.
Recent updates suggest he’s asking for $15 million per year, which would be the exact same amount Sean McVay is making in Los Angeles. That is a huge number for a first-time head coach. There are also indications that Johnson will be careful about walking into a situation with uncertainty at the top. Poles only has one year left on his contract. The coach isn’t likely to bite if he fears the GM will get fired after one season if the team doesn’t win right away. That is a question the Bears must get answered soon.
The price tag shouldn’t be an issue. Warren reportedly has the green light from the McCaskeys to spend whatever is necessary to land the best coach and staff. If they think Ben Johnson is worth making the push, they will do it. Don’t forget former Bears offensive coordinator John Shoop was his mentor. He also worked at Boston College when his coaching career started. Poles is an alumnus there. There are some connections. Don’t forget Warren worked in Detroit for three years as well. Nobody would bat an eye if this ends up being the guy they want.

Pay the going rate for a NFL coach. The bonus for winning a Super Bowl would give him $15 M retroactive to 2025.
@Arnie…..hahaha. You are not kidding
Shouldn’t the fact that John Schoop was his mentor and inspiration to get into coaching be enough of a red flag? Maybe we should consider Gary Crowton, Dowal Loggains, or Terry Shea disciples too? Remember when Shea brought in Jonathan Quinn as a backup QB to help teach his system? Good times.
I feel Johnson is the most prominent risk/reward hire. If he can lead and hold the team and staff accountable, we are off to the races. If he is weak….
Of the non-employed HCs, I am with Johnson or Vrabel. Johnson needs to be vetted.
I am with Jack and skeptical that McCaskeys will pay someone top money. That’s why my gut says they go with Flores, he will be cheaper.
JFK, that’s a very fair point sir. But as David said, based on his experience I’d assume he will push for major Oline upgrades.
