Earlier this week, it was reported that some veteran players on the Chicago Bears approached the team’s leadership, suggesting that Caleb Williams be benched in favor of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. Bagent, who is 2-2 as a starter for the Bears, stepped in last season when Justin Fields was injured. ESPN’s Silvy of Waddle and Silvy first reported this request from the Bears veterans on Tuesday. He also commented on the situation, referencing the team’s former offensive coordinator in relation to the news about Bagent.
“After talking to a few people with knowledge of the situation, players went to Matt Eberflus & Ryan Poles asking them to make a change at offensive coordinator. There have also been a few veteran players requesting Bagent starts.“
There are too many leaks.
After Silvy’s report came out, chaos ensued at Halas Hall, sparking a media frenzy. Many players, including the new Bears offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, addressed the media for the first time on Wednesday in the wake of the last 48 hours of news.
One player, Bears tight end and team captain Cole Kmet, was directly asked about rumors of veterans requesting that Tyson Bagent start. He quickly stepped up to set the record straight and cleared up any misconceptions surrounding the report.
“That didn’t happen.”
Who do you believe?
Stories like this make it difficult to know which side to trust. The constant leaks coming out of the Bears’ locker room are concerning and raise doubts about what is really true. Mikey Cuz reported that the two veterans requesting this ‘benching’ were DJ Moore and Cole Kmet. He clarified that this was not a demand to bench Caleb or a push for Bagent. Instead, it was a genuine discussion led by veterans with the team leadership, focused on the overall team, including the quarterback position.

While the media isn’t flawless, the Bears are clearly facing serious internal issues. Matt Eberflus’s refusal to rule out benching Caleb Williams on Wednesday, only adds more pressure on the rookie quarterback, making you question whether Cole Kmet’s statements hold any weight. Only time will reveal the truth.
When the Chicago media smells blood, you will get rumors from tweets from rumors from tweets as if they are facts. I sympathize with the players and coaches in Chicago because the media is so evil. Everyone and their grandma knows the Offense wasn’t performing. It’s also clear that the O-Line has not really been able to do the job. In fact, only one OL starter was playing Sunday and it’s a guy that everyone said a few weeks ago should be benched (Center). Both Guards and both Tackles were out. That is devastation as far as protection of the… Read more »
@TGena – Look your favorite quote, or a version of it, was used at the end of this article! People do read your posts 🙂
Flus not ruling out benching Caleb only adds more pressure to his plate. Caleb is obviously struggling the past few games, although some of it isn’t his fault. Now when he’s out there he is going to have more on his mind, like possibly being benched. Flus is terrible even it comes to the development of a QB and the defense is regressing as well. Every day it seems like it’s getting worse for the Bears. The way things are going, we are likely going to endure a dismantling by GB. Somewhere to the tune of 42-7. The spread earlier… Read more »
It’s “The Claw”.
In the first pic, is Bagent doing that Italian configuration with his thumb on his nose and wiggling his fingers at local Kmet, meaning something like up your ass? When I do it to a hyena, I use both hands/thumbs in tandem at the same time. Try it sometime when you are in “Little Italy”.
