Ryan Poles May Have Found His Perfect Pass Rush Solution

-

The Chicago Bears haven’t tipped their hand on what they will do at the trade deadline yet. That is typical of GM Ryan Poles. He always manages to keep his intentions quiet until he’s ready to move. It is how he ended up landing Montez Sweat last year. Coming into this year, the team had hoped to score another proven pass rusher to pair with him. They thought about drafting Jared Verse but wanted Rome Odunze more. They also made a run at four-time Pro Bowler Matthew Judon in September. He went to Atlanta instead.

Poles had to settle for acquiring rotational specialist Darrell Taylor, who has been a solid addition. However, the team could still use another horse. They haven’t yet found that true #2 guy. Maybe the deadline could offer somebody like that. Sure enough, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com revealed one such name could be available.

“Denver Broncos edge Baron Browning: A converted off-the-ball LB who had 4.5 sacks last year, Browning’s playing time has dwindled in Denver and he’s in a contract year. He could be available. Denver has depth at the position. Linebacker Jonathan Cooper could draw interest, as well.”

Ryan Poles has every reason to be interested in Cooper.

The former 7th round pick was a breakout hit last season in Denver, racking up 8.5 sacks. This season, he has 4.5 in seven games with 29 total pressures. Nobody can deny he is a key reason the Broncos’ defense has the 3rd best defense in the NFL. So why would they consider trading him? The primary reason is likely his contract. Cooper is a free agent in 2025. Unless they are prepared to give him a strong extension, trading him at the deadline before he departs makes the most sense. Ryan Poles has every reason to make this deal if Cooper is available. The kid is 26 years old and ascending as a player. He’s 6’4 and 257, so he meets this system’s size requirements for a defensive end. Chicago has $72 million in cap space next year. They can easily afford an extension, which will probably fall around $20 million per year. Compensation likely wouldn’t be more than a 3rd round pick.

That loss was for all the male hyenas on this site. It serves you right and proper. You better repent before it is too late. I’ll be waiting. Truth does not blush.

As I said yesterday, it’s a good thing for the Bears that Daniels is not playing in this game.
