The Chicago Bears spent all off-season overhauling their wide receiver group. It started by trading for Keenan Allen in March, adding a six-time Pro Bowler to the mix. Then GM Ryan Poles landed Rome Odunze with the #9 overall pick the next month. Suddenly, along with D.J. Moore, rookie QB Caleb Williams had the most talented trio of receivers in recent franchise history. However, the saying goes, you can never have too much of a good thing. Now, Davante Adams is a name connected to Chicago.
Bears fans should know him well. He was a terror during his years with the Green Bay Packers, regularly torching cornerbacks for big gains as Aaron Rodgers’ favorite target. Unfortunately, the former All-Pro has fallen on hard times in Las Vegas. Their quarterback woes have prompted the 31-year-old to request a trade from the Raiders. They have begun fielding offers with the belief that something could happen soon. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated believes the Bears can and should be one of the teams involved.
Bears: Adams can serve as an aide for Odunze, though Keenan Allen is a great veteran presence. And, he can really help slow the game down for Williams. Imagine having such a glut at the position that your four receivers on a given down could be Odunze, Allen, DJ Moore and Adams. The Bears have yet to run a play out of 10- or 01-personnel (one running back, four wide receivers; or one tight end, four wide receivers) according to SumerSports’s personnel tracker, and only six teams have run either formation so far this year (none with a positive EPA per play). But it does keep your rotation fresh and give Williams the rangiest playmaker in the NFL save for Justin Jefferson.
Davante Adams is a virtual impossibility for the Bears.
For one, he’s made it clear he wants to go to a team with an established quarterback. As of now, the New York Jets (Aaron Rodgers) and New Orleans Saints (Derek Carr) are most often mentioned. The Buffalo Bills with Josh Allen are another possibility. The general belief is the Jets are the heavy favorite. Chicago shouldn’t have any desire to make such a move. They already have a receiver in his 30s carrying a hefty salary cap hit in Allen. There is little point in adding another, especially when the cost to get him is likely a day two pick.
There is no question Davante Adams would be a great addition to any roster. Sadly, the Bears’ window to make a move came earlier than when the receiver became available. Besides, he likely wouldn’t have liked the idea of playing with a rookie anyway. He doesn’t have much time left. Winning a Super Bowl is of the utmost priority for him. Williams isn’t there yet. While one could argue neither is Rodgers, the familiarity makes that move obvious.

Memo to Ryan Poles: Allen for Adams, straight up. Do it, you coward.
As good as Devante Adams is he’s not what the Bears need most. Without a strong offensive line it doesn’t really matter how great a wide receiver is because the quarterback won’t have the time to throw an accurate pass and without a strong offensive line they won’t have a good running game either. When the Bears fix their OL they will become a powerhouse because they have the other pieces necessary to win!
Does Adams play OL too? No? Then what’s the point?
