Matt Eberflus Finally Hints At Long Awaited Roster Change

-

Continuity is a big part of an offensive line’s success, and head coach Matt Eberflus knows this. However, there also comes a time when a certain gear in the machine isn’t working anymore and must be replaced. It has been an open secret for weeks that Eberflus and the Chicago Bears brass are reaching a breaking point with veteran guard Nate Davis. When he’s not injured, which is often, he’s been plagued by inconsistency and questions of intensity and effort.

Last Sunday in Houston did nothing to ease those concerns. Combine that with the new update that Davis has aggravated a groin injury, and you can understand why Eberflus is ready to make a change. He didn’t outright say it, but his comments about veteran backup Matt Pryor suggest something is brewing.

“He’s really improved. He’s one of our most improved linemen. … We really see improvement in him and what he’s brought to the table in terms of his work ethic, his energy, and what he brings there, too, as a teammate. Super excited for him if he’s working in there with Nate or whatever that might be, we’ll see in terms of getting closer to the game, but he’s really had a good work week.”

Pryor had a standout preseason for the Bears, allowing only one pressure in 39 snaps. He has starting experience at right guard from his stops in Philadelphia and Indianapolis. With Davis being questionable for Sunday, it is hard not to think this move is happening.

Matt Eberflus going to Pryor is understandable.

Yeah, Davis might be more athletic and the higher-paid guy, but none of that matters if he won’t stay healthy or stop making mental mistakes. Pryor is a massive player with good strength. He should be able to help support undersized center Coleman Shelton in the run game. While his feet aren’t overly quick, he has the mass and length to stonewall most defensive tackles in pass protection. Nobody is saying this is the ideal solution for the Bears. They would love it if an established Pro Bowler were available.

That isn’t the case, though.

In times like this, you must be practical. If Davis isn’t up to the task, you must be willing to give somebody else an opportunity. Pryor has talent and can help them in certain areas where they’ve struggled. Matt Eberflus also knows the upcoming slate of opponents is somewhat softer compared to the previous two. They don’t need Pryor to dominate. All he has to do is not make mistakes and be reliable. If they can get that, the offense might finally gain some traction.

. Good news for a change. Put the guys on the field who actually respect the privilege of being a Chicago Bear. Send Nate Davis home. Tell him to come back… if he ever is ready to practice. Indy is in terrible shape now. I just read an article last night on one their sites that stated that the Colts better not treat Richardson like Bryce Young and dump him. When a team is saying that about a QB they just took last year you know they are walking around with a “KICK ME” sign on their backs. So let’s… Read more »

So Kiran Amegadjie is still not ready to play NFL football?

That’s fine. Let Kiran take his time. October 18th will be the one-year anniversary of Kiran Amegadjie’s surgery.

Larry Borom and Ryan Bates will be coming back from IR, soon. And the Bears O-line will finally be at “full strength.”

Then, let’s hope the Bears can mix it all up — and put the “five best guys” on the field — whether or not, any of them is a “Ryan Poles guy.”

“Performance over politics” is how it was described to us once — not that long ago.
