Nobody would blame Austin Booker if he chose to play the Chicago Bears‘ final preseason game with the intent of avoiding injuries. He was in no danger of losing his roster spot, and his two previous appearances cemented the likelihood that he would get lots of playing time this season. However, that isn’t how the rookie 5th round pick is wired. The final outcome of the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs might be meaningless, but every time Booker stepped on the field, he would go 100 mph.
That was evident throughout the first half. Kansas City’s offensive line had a miserable time trying to block him. Don’t be fooled by the one tackle and one QB hit Booker was credited with. He was in the backfield constantly, working over blockers and completely disrupting the Chiefs’ offensive execution. If people were concerned the rookie might be a flash in the pan, this performance laid that to rest. He has been a presence across four preseason appearances now.
Austin Booker is terrifying.
Remember, he’s only 240 lbs. His frame suggests he will add considerable mass in the coming months, which will increase his power. Also, he is 21 years old. He’s a kid still learning the game. If he is this effective already, it is amazing to think what he can become with time and work. He has the good fortune of having Eric Washington as his new defensive coordinator. Washington is one of the best defensive line specialists in the NFL. Few are better teachers for that position. If Austin Booker takes instructions the right way, he could morph into one of the best pass rushers the Bears have had in a long time. It has become easy to see why GM Ryan Poles felt so confident about passing on Matthew Judon once the price got too high. The team truly believes Booker has special qualities.
Dandy Panzy ass!
By the 6th game this season Booker will be the !1 DE across from Sweat, waiting to see what happens when Booker gets to play across from Sweat in this new defensive scheme.
Booker is the real deal. Book it. (Sorry for the horrible pun)
I remember when Allen Page was 210lbs running marathons playing defensive tackle for the Bears and always seemed to be disrupting plays.
He might be light in the pants but he ain’t giving up. Looking forward to his peanut-butter pro debut. I believe he’s the real thing. Just has to be realized at another level…possibly/probably 2025 breakout warrior.
