The Chicago Bears haven’t been able to address their pass rush situation to a degree that makes fans comfortable. Rookie Austin Booker and veteran Daniel Hardy have delivered an excellent preseason, but a lack of clarity remains opposite Montez Sweat. This is likely why GM Ryan Poles made a run at Matthew Judon last week. The four-time Pro Bowler was available due to a contract standoff with the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, the two sides couldn’t find common ground on money. As a result, Judon went to the Atlanta Falcons instead.
Poles stated that while the Bears remain open to other possibilities, they are comfortable with the lineup they currently have. It might be true to some extent, but actions speak louder than words. Everything points to them still searching for more help. Albert Breer of the MMQB revealed on YouTube that the team remains in contact with Yannick Ngakoue. The veteran pass rusher played for Chicago last season, posting four sacks before breaking his ankle down the stretch. He’s still only 29 years old and remains unsigned. Perhaps they plan to pivot his way at some point soon.
The Chicago Bears may wait a little longer on this.
One thing about the NFL is a clause in veteran contracts that states they no longer become guaranteed after the first week of the regular season. This means the Bears could play the opener against Tennessee and then bring Ngakoue in, ensuring they don’t have to guarantee him any money after his disappointing 2023. He would have to earn his money, which would certainly provide motivation for him to have a bounce-back season. If it doesn’t work out, the team doesn’t lose much.

Much of this depends on Ngakoue himself. All signs point to his ankle being healthy. Less talented and older pass rushers have already signed with other teams. The only explanation at this point is he’s been asking for too much money. Nobody wants to pay it, given what happened last year. He might be holding out to see if somebody gets desperate. It hasn’t happened. Options for both sides have dwindled. It feels almost inevitable they should come together for one more round.
Based on the performance of the DEs we currently have, there is no need to sign Ngakoue.
If a final roster Edge gets injured, like Walker or Booker, sure. Then we may have to.
But I like our guys so far.
The OL is my only concern. We are not stout and reliable there yet.

What is human nature? Nobody knows for sure. But watching some old Twighlight shows and reading comments here when things do not go smoothly, should get you pretty close to the answer.
BTW, problems or even crises are either real, imagined, or manufactured. Thus, solutions might be necessary, un-needed, or even counterproductive. Now apply this matrix of thought to the current Bears situations on the DL, & OL, if you dare.
Yannick played noticeably better after the acquisition of Sweat; that said, Byron is right, there’s a reason he hasn’t been signed yet so IF they are debating signing him, I’m waiting until after the final cuts for sure. They may be some shocking cuts and what player wouldn’t want to come here with the arrow pointing up.
A post week 1 signing sounds ok in theory. But what kind of shape is he in, how long will it take him to ramp up, and how much money does he want? He didn’t perform all that well last year. I only see us signing him if Sweat is still dealing with injury. Booker has shown he was a steal so far and Hardy has looked like a man possessed as well.
