Before becoming one of baseball’s best managers, Chicago Cubs skipper Craig Counsell was an outstanding baseball player. He spent 16 seasons playing in the majors, playing in 1624 games for five different teams. Along the way, he won a World Series with the 1997 Florida Marlins and the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks. He ended his playing career with six years playing for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Counsell’s roots run deep in Wisconsin. He grew up in Whitefish Bay, a north suburb of Milwaukee. His dad, John, spent decades working for the Brewers organization. Not only was it special for Counsell to play for the team his dad once worked for from 2007-2011, but he also got the chance to manage the team in 2015.
In nine years as their manager, Counsell took the Brewers to heights they rarely saw in their history. Multiple division titles and deep playoff runs happened under his watch. The way he got the most out of players who weren’t household names intrigued other clubs that maybe they could do the same for them. After meetings with the Cleveland Guardians and New York Mets concluded, Counsell was expected to make a decision to leave Milwaukee for one of the two any day. Then, the improbable happened.
Seemingly out of nowhere, the Chicago Cubs announced that they relieved David Ross of his managerial duties and hired Craig Counsell as their next manager. No one in baseball was alerted or led onto this news until after it happened, leaving many shocked. The Brewers, on the other hand, were livid. They knew they’d lose Counsell, just not to their biggest rivals.
Initially, fans vented their frustrations, but tempers died. Now that the two teams are playing, a video that may have turned the Cubs around was released.
New Craig Counsell “Diss Track” May Be Just What The Cubs Needed
After Craig Counsell to the Cubs became public knowledge, Brewers fans lashed out in rage. They called into Chicago radio exclaiming their displeasures. Milwaukee natives told Counsell he was never welcomed in Wisconsin again. They even defaced a sign at a Little League field, dedicating the park in his name.
Counsell moving south may have given the Brewers an extra chip on their shoulder to use as motivation. They have started the season hotter than anyone expected them to. Their starting pitching has been superb, and young talent is helping them win games offensively. Things were rolling for them, especially after a big win against the Cubs on Monday afternoon.
Then, Tuesday morning happened. The above video was released to the internet. It’s quite possibly the saddest thing ever created. This Brewers fan thought this was a dunk on Craig Counsell and the underperforming Cubs, as the Brew Crew was flying high.
The overwhelming reality is that this video had nothing to do with the Cubs’ winning last night, but it’s sure fun to think this represents the Brewers’ downfall. The Cubs are now 1-0 since this “hit piece” dropped, and Shota Imanaga is on the mound tonight.
We can have Imanaga on the bump every night and it won’t change anything. We can’t put runs up plain and simple! This is ridiculous. After each one of these guys come back from IL (which all of them have basically) they have been horrible! This has nothing to do with a song or counsell. It has everything to do with a mediocre crew of batters. Hoerner and Swanson are at the bottom of the order now with no real leadoff guy. Suzuki has done nothing and probably should be benched to think about it again. This is just all… Read more »
