New Details Reveal Jaylon Johnson’s Demands Stalled Bears Contract Talks

-

In the latest episode of the BFR Podcast, the official Chicago Bears podcast for Sports Mockery, hosts Dave and Ficky spoke NFL Insider Ari Meirov from The 33rd Team. Our conversation covered various aspects of the Chicago Bears, with a focus not only on the quarterback situation but also on other team matters. One intriguing topic discussed was the contract situation with cornerback Jaylon Johnson. Here’s what was revealed during the discussion:

  • The Chicago Bears made a strong effort in recent weeks to negotiate a contract extension with Jaylon Johnson. According to Ari Meirov, Johnson should have accepted the deal. It was that good.
  • Initially, the Bears offered a 5-year contract, but they revised it to a 4-year deal just before the franchise tag deadline this past Monday.
  • The proposed contracts included metrics that would have surpassed those of Jaire Alexander, the highest-paid cornerback in the league. However, neither deal would have made Johnson the highest-paid cornerback overall.
  • It appears that Jaylon Johnson wants to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league.
  • The issue seems to revolve around an APY (average per year) salary concern rather than a problem with guaranteed money.

Currently, Jaire Alexander is the highest-paid cornerback with a salary of $21 million per year. It seems that Jaylon Johnson wants to top this amount. The Bears have until July 15 to potentially negotiate a contract extension; otherwise, Johnson will have to play under the franchise tag. It will be interesting to see if the Bears and GM Ryan Poles stick to their numbers as they have in the past, especially considering their past negotiations with former LB Roquan Smith. However, it’s well known that cornerback is considered a premium position compared to linebackers.

, It’s hindsight now since he’s signed but I did my share to get you out of the down vote hole. Agree, there is a cap and if you want to build a monster team you need talent everywhere. Any player that DEMANDS (see Roquan) to be paid THE MOST at his position should have a hard time looking his teammates in the eye when the Turk comes callin’.

P.S. In regards to your follow up, you are still right, at the heart of the matter.

The deal got done. As long as he performs at the level, he did this year things will be fine. JJ didn’t play the last game against the Packers, and you could tell by the soft coverage. Really in that game another jamb up defensive end would have been nice also.

It would seem that I spoke out of context and I am ashamed of myself for reading what these writers put down and judging a player accordingly. I should have known better than to take anything that a SM writer has to say as anything but schoolgirl gossip. I apologize to all commenters.
