3 Big Takeaways From Ryan Poles Press Conference

-

Prior to the NFL 2024 Combine, Ryan Poles, the General Manager of the Chicago Bears, addressed the media in a press conference. Here are my three biggest takeaways.

A contract extension for Jaylon Johnson is currently being negotiated.

Ryan Poles kicked off the press conference by addressing his All-Pro cornerback, Jaylon Johnson. He announced that the Bears are actively negotiating an extension with Johnson and expressed confidence in reaching an agreement. Poles emphasized his preference for reaching a deal rather than resorting to the franchise tag. I believe that a deal will come together very soon.

Ryan Poles sees similarities between Patrick Mahomes and Caleb Williams.

Depending on your stance in the quarterback debate, you might either appreciate or disagree with Ryan Poles statement. However, it’s worth considering its validity given Poles involvement with drafting Patrick Mahomes during his time in Kansas City. While Williams has yet to play in the NFL, he’s widely regarded as an elite quarterback prospect. Kyle Long also acknowledged Poles remarks on the quarterbacks stating it was noteworthy. Poles also made it clear that he hasn’t heard anything from Williams indicating that he doesn’t want to be in Chicago.

One intriguing quote from Poles was his classification of quarterbacks into two types: Artists and Surgeons. In my opinion, Williams might possess qualities of both categories which is fun to think about.

Justin Fields trade will happen before Free Agency.

Ryan Poles stated today that if the team opts to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, he believes it would be necessary to trade Justin Fields before free agency begins.

Despite acknowledging the loyalty for Fields in the Bears locker room, Poles emphasized his responsibility to prioritize the franchise’s best interests. While Poles expressed uncertainty about his plans, his remarks in the press conference strongly suggest a potential departure for Justin Fields. However, that is simply my opinion and have not heard confirmation regarding this take. It just seems likely that trade discussions will heat up during the combine, and by the end of next week, there may be true clarity on Fields future for the upcoming season.

What would a trade look like for Justin Fields?

Dave, at least you differentiate between “your opinion,” and “fact” when there aren’t any facts involved.
I heard that Great White sharks were coming ashore on Lake Michigan. One was seen walking on Division St. NFL insider told me, and he’s always been right about the weather before.
Please pass that onto Erik.

Poles has not indicated that he’s trading JF1. All that he said is if he were to trade JF1 it would have to be before free agency because teams who need a qb will be signing free agent qbs and that will narrow the market and lower JF1’S value. Teams will have to make their offers for the #1 pick also so a decision can be made on the best offer and Poles can see which way he’s gonna go. Poles is building value on all fronts

If Fields is as bad as y’all think, the Bears shouldn’t be afraid to trade him to Minnesota.

I expect to take some lumps with a rookie QB. We have a solid D to help cover mistakes. We just have to stay disciplined and execute. We are a young team and could have a nice window of contention. It would be nice to have an offense that isn’t disjointed at best, and inept at worst.

So if I’m reading this correctly when Williams is our quarterback we will no longer blow multiple games when we have double digit leads in the fourth quarter. Williams will not play hero ball and fumble, because he doesn’t have a history of doing that, when things are going horribly wrong. This is great news. With those extra 3 or 4 wins we should be in the playoffs. I honestly do hope that all of this comes true. There will not be a bigger Williams supporter on here than me but some people on here might have unrealistic expectations. Fields… Read more »
