The Chicago Bears offensive coordinator search continues to widen, and for the first time, they interviewed a candidate that doesn’t come from the Shanahan/McVay coaching tree. Peter Schrager of NFL Network revealed they met with former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman. He was the one who ran the offense that helped Lamar Jackson win the league MVP in 2019. This comes across as the first candidate to make one think the Bears are seriously considering the idea of keeping Justin Fields.
Roman has extensive playcalling experience going back to his time with the San Francisco 49ers. He’s gotten productive seasons out of Colin Kaepernick, Tyrod Taylor, and Jackson. If the Bears were considering the idea of sticking with Fields, it would make obvious sense to look at Roman. Few have gotten more out of dual-threat quarterbacks in this league than him. His reputation is one of establishing elite rushing attacks that take full advantage of a QB’s mobility. However, he also has a stigma of not being able to maximize the passing attack, particularly with wide receivers.
The Chicago Bears may have noted Roman’s infatuation with Fields.
The former coordinator went on SiriusXM NFL, where he gushed about the quarterback’s vast potential. He sees somebody with a chance to be special. Maybe the Bears simply haven’t found the right coach to get it out of him. No doubt Roman has a ton of expertise on the subject. He got results everywhere he’s been, and with quarterbacks who aren’t nearly as gifted as Fields. The one issue is it would be a considerable scheme shift, meaning Fields would have to learn a new system for the third time in four years.
That said, there is another possibility. This could be an indication the Chicago Bears may have eyes on a particular quarterback in the upcoming draft. That would be Jayden Daniels. Many have compared the reigning Heisman winner to Jackson. He is the unquestioned best dual-threat quarterback in this class. While an accomplished passer, his mobility is what sets him apart from others. Maybe that is something they have in mind. Either way, this interview certainly sends interesting signals.

Jayden Daniels is the best QB on the board. Period.

Poles needs to pay Roman whatever he needs to make the move, and then sign Kaepernick as QB2.
If they hire him, it means their keeping JF1
Tua. Dak. Hurts. What happens when a strong roster falls apart or is depleted with injuries or just doesn’t show up to play and a mediocre QB is expected to elevate his teammates? Slapped straight out of the playoffs and sent home. We’ve watched it all weekend long, and building around Fields will have the same result. Was it Romo yesterday on air that said, “If you have a great QB you always have a chance.” or something like that? Learn from what’s happening right in front of you. Goodbye, Justin. Welcome to Chicago, Caleb.
