The Chicago Bears have already begun the process of making some big decisions regarding their structure going into a pivotal 2024 off-season. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus reached one conclusion rather quickly. Changes were needed on the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, along with three other assistants, were released. Lack of progress in the passing game and the lack of development from younger players were cited as primary reasons for the decision. That leaves one other question to address. Should Justin Fields be shown the door as well?
Here is where it gets interesting. Bears fans are split on the subject. Some think it’s time to cut the cord. Others think Getsy was the problem. It’s been pretty consistent when the conversations shift to those who have actually played the game. They think Fields needs to stay. Count active defenders Zaire Franklin and E.J. Speed among them. The two hosts of The Trenches Show and current linebackers for the Indianapolis Colts railed against Getsy for his horrible offensive scheme.
The Bears need to keep it simple. Hire a competent coordinator and draft Marvin Harrison Jr.
The plan to replace Luke Getsy could say a lot.
Thus far, the Bears have met or will meet five different coordinator options. They all have two things in common. Each has previous playcalling experience, and each runs an offense that is similar to what the Bears run or would likely fit Fields’ skillset. Maybe they feel the same way Franklin and Speed do. If they find a quality coordinator and keep stacking the offense with playmakers, the quarterback can finally make that big leap forward. One thing is for sure. It would be an incredibly bold move.

Experts feel the 2024 quarterback class is significantly stronger than last year. Chicago holds the #1 pick. Caleb Williams of USC has been called a generational talent by more than a few people with serious credentials. One former GM even said he’d have taken Williams over Peyton Manning. Poles would need a ton of guts to pass on all of that to stick with Fields again. Then again, his trade down from #1 last year yielded great results. Perhaps he feels he can pull it off again. This time he won’t have to worry about Luke Getsy ruining his plans.
Being a Bears fan is so aggravating. Riddle me this: if Fields was held back by Getsy, why did Tyson Bagent, a guy with no NFL experience and the only player from a Div. 2 school, post a higher winning percentage than Fields this season? It’s easier for the fanboys to pretend Bagent doesn’t exist I guess.
@PoochPest I totally agree. Regardless of who you have on the roster, coaching is the differencemaker. One example I heard recently that is a perfect example of just one way coaching is the difference between winning and losing, was when Bill Belichick was the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants as they prepared to meet Buffalo in the Super Bowl. The Giants had one of, if not the best defense in the league that year, and were especially dominant when it came to stopping the run. Despite that, Belichick went to his defense, led by guys like LT and… Read more »
@Arnie What you said! You pointed out the differential between Packs and Bears 1st round draft picks. I would point out that Poles seems to be leveraging higher picks for MORE picks. That is fine, but that places more emphasis on coaching than ever. Lower picks are usually high “ceiling” (meaning athletically or physically superior) but coming from smaller schools, less technical trading etc). You simply cannot expect them to perform with BIG schools or SEC. There has to be massive emphasis on coaching up these lower round talents. Bra ton Jones is a great example, but so is Richard… Read more »
May be in different boat. . . I think it is a mistake to trade Fields. Now. I think the Bears MUST get their coaching right. If they get a great coordinator and coaching unit, try it on Fields. He can take it. If he gets massively better, that’s proof. They can coach. If they don’t, they might not make anyone else better, so draft someone else and let’s see. But if they can’t make either Fields or the other guy functional, it’s back to the beginning with coaching. I just think it’s a mistake to throw a new coach… Read more »
Hahaha! @Beardown54 I hope nothing bad acts up! 🙊🙈🙉🤣 Coaching! 🙀 Everyone seems to think the Bears screwed up with Fields, but a cheap generational talent is the answer. They did screw up. They didn’t identify the coaching problem two years ago and work to fix it. It isn’t just getting an OC. If they get a bad one, he’ll screw up whoever they draft. If he’s a great one, they’ll lose him in a year or two to a HC opportunities, and their next coaching screw up will drag down more bodies. I just want them to fix the… Read more »
