The White Sox are favorites to land a former Little League World Series star Jurdrick Profar when the new international signing period opens on January 15th, according to MLB writer Francys Romero.
The 17-year-old shortstop is expected to sign with the White Sox for around $700,000, according to Romero’s report. The name Profar may sound familiar. That’s because Jurdrick is related to San Diego Padres infielder Jurickson Profar.
Jurdrick Profar represented the island of Curacao, a 171-square-foot island off the coast of Venezuela, in the 2019 Little League World Series. Curacao has seen a handful of MLB talent. Jurickson Profar and Jonathan Schoop helped lead Curacao to an LLWS title in 2004. Andrew Jones, Kenley Jansen, Andrelton Simmons, and Ozzie Albies are all also from Curacao.
In seven LLWS tournament games with the Caribbean Region, Profar hit .421/.522/.579 with eight hits and eight runs scored. He also threw 9.1 innings in three games posting a 1.93 ERA and 12 strikeouts. His Caribbean Region squad made it to the finals but lost to the Southwest Region 8-0 in the championship game.
Profar throws and bats right-handed. Scouts project him to be an infielder long-term. According to Romero, he is considered a multi-tool talent with above-average speed, contract ability, and arm strength.
