The Chicago Bears head coaching position has been in flux for over a decade now. Four different men have claimed the job since Lovie Smith was fired. None of them have made it beyond a fourth season. Matt Eberflus looks like he will continue that streak. His six wins in 27 games are the worst any Bears head coach has managed over a similar stretch in franchise history. Multiple insiders have indicated that he will only survive for a third season if he goes on a strong run to finish 2023. Optimism isn’t high. It is why many are already looking to the coaching carousel in January, and it seems Jim Harbaugh is once again connected to the organization.
Only this time, it might not be one-sided.
It’s no secret Harbaugh is interested in the Bears job. Several people have said it’s his dream position in the NFL, having been a big admirer of Mike Ditka. The primary issue is the organization hasn’t been interested. They had opportunities to meet with him in 2018 and 2022 when the position opened up. They passed both times. It might be different this time, at least according to NFL Notifications.
People will shrug off this account as nothing but nonsense. However, unlike others on Twitter, it has proven to have accurate information a few times over the past several months. It revealed a three-team trade was close between Chicago, Houston, and another team in February. Carolina owner David Tepper has since confirmed it was the Panthers. The Texans shied away from the deal, leading to Chicago and Carolina making their own trade instead.

Jim Harbaugh might be picking the perfect time to jump.
His situation at Michigan is as volatile as ever. Despite having the program on the cusp of a national championship, he’s been suspended for the rest of the regular season for sign-stealing allegations. There are also rumblings of a contentious issue regarding his contract. Going back to the NFL seems like a logical idea, similar to what Pete Carroll did in 2010 before sanctions hit USC. After swinging and missing on two first-time head coach in Eberflus and Matt Nagy, some believe the Bears would do better finding somebody with proven experience.
Nobody fits that profile better than Jim Harbaugh. He has won everywhere he’s coached, from San Diego to Standford, San Francisco, and now Michigan. The guy understands how to establish a winning culture, has a good eye for talent, and understands how to properly develop quarterbacks. Don’t forget Bears president Kevin Warren was Big Ten commissioner before coming to Chicago. He has an established relationship with Harbaugh. That connection might be what finally gets something done.
I’ve never fully understood why the Bears didn’t bring Harbaugh in for an interview atleast. Talk to the guy and see what his ideas are for your team. What his goals are, and what he thinks can be accomplished realistcly. It seems silly to kick the tires on everyone besides a guy who can have a direct impact on your offense, especially your QB. Plus he’s a freakin Chicago Bear.
George McCaskey obviously likes what Kansas City is doing. He hired a Head Coach from there and followed it up by hiring a General Manager from there as well. The one thing he hasn’t paid attention to is what finally got them over the top, Andy Reid. Andy was a proven, successful coach having lead the Eagles to multiple NFC Championship games and the Superbowl. The Bears own version of Andy Reid is there for them. Jim Harbaugh, lead the 49ers to multiple NFC Championship games and the Superbowl. Sound familiar? George it’s time to bring Jim home. Let’s go!

The Harbaugh & Warren connection has been mentioned ad nauseum times, and I came away with the feeling it was not a rosy one. Now we’re being led to believe that connection will lead to Harbaugh being named our next head coach. I will be like everyone else, WE’LL SEE.
