Breaking news out of Lake Forest Friday afternoon. The Bears announced they will honor Dick Butkus with a patch to be worn on their jerseys, effective immediately. The patch, a football with the number 51, will be worn for the rest of the season.
Butkus, who embodied what being a Chicago Bear was all about, passed away on October 5th. He was 80 years old.
Butkus played his entire NFL career in Chicago. He was the 3rd overall draft choice in 1965. His last season was 1973. Butkus was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first eight seasons.
At the time of this writing, no other details regarding any on-field activities to honor the legend have become available.

New and Notes
Khalil Herbert, who injured his ankle in the victory over the Washington Commanders, was placed on injured reserve Friday. The Bears also added WR Equanimeous St. Brown to the injured list. Both players will now miss at least four games. Herbert and St. Brown would be eligible to return to the active roster in time for the week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers.
It appears the Bears will get some much needed help ahead of Sunday’s game vs. the Vikings. Kyler Gordon is eligible to be elevated to the active roster after a 4-week stint on the injured list. Also, both Jaylon Johnson and Eddie Jackson are hopeful to play after being inactive recently, due to their injuries.
Sunday’s game will be telecast on Fox, with a noon kickoff.
