Eighteen games. That is how long Alan Williams lasted as the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator. Most of it wasn’t pretty. The past 11 games he coordinated saw his defense allow 25 or more points. He was fast becoming one of the worst hires the organization has had at that job since Mel Tucker. Then things took an even weirder twist when he mysteriously stepped away from the team after a blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers on opening. Details as to why remain sketchy. Rumors persist it isn’t anything good. However, one thing became clear on Wednesday.
The man is done in Chicago. Williams submitted his resignation to the Bears and is stepping away from football. The move apparently blindsided the coaching staff, according to Albert Breer of the MMQB.
This has to be the single most unprecedented day of Bears news in modern history. Not only did Williams resign amidst controversy, but quarterback Justin Fields also appeared to throw offensive coordinator Luke Getsy under the bus for the team’s struggles the past two weeks. Fields quickly tried to walk the comments back. Nothing appears under control about this organization. That is never a good sign for the men in charge.
Alan Williams might only be the first to go.
Head coach Matt Eberflus isn’t even close to halfway through his second season and the team is already falling apart. One coordinator is gone. Another is under fire from both the fans and his own quarterback. For somebody who preached about fostering a culture of team unity, it’s been anything but that over the past two weeks. Best of all, the Bears have a game against the defending Super Bowl champions a few days from now. They may have not even hit true rock bottom yet.

Nobody is sad to see Alan Williams go. Nothing about his tenure suggested he knew what he was doing. His exit is more emblematic of a wider issue. There is a realistic possibility new team president Kevin Warren may have to flush the entire regime and start over next off-season. Eberflus is undoubtedly coaching for his job over the next couple of months. Fields is also playing for his. Nobody is safe after a fiasco like this.
Interesting tidbit lost in the shuffle of all today’s new was the release of Nathan Peterman. Coincidence? Bwahaha!

As a die hard Bears fan ive never been this embarrassed to be one. Founding team in the NFL and this is what we as fans are dealing with. Everyone in the building minus Kevin Warren needs to go.
