Breaking news! According to sources, the Chicago Bears have released veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman. With that move, Ryan Poles has UFDA Tyson Bagent backing up Justin Fields.
Get used to the name Tyson Bagent (pronounced BAY-gent). Tyson Bagent came to the Bears this spring, signing as an undrafted free agent after a remarkable college career at Division II Sheperd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. If he had a career at a Division One school, he probably would have been one of the top-rated QBs in this year’s draft.

In a twist of fate Bagent was named to the American Team in this year’s Senior Bowl. Bears offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy was the head coach for the squad. After Tyson was not drafted, the Bears quickly scooped up the QB.
With Justin Fields barely seeing any action in the preseason, Bagent easily out-performed P. J. Walker and Nathan Peterman to earn the nod as the 2nd string QB.
The Bears must submit their 53-man roster to the league office by 3:00 today.
You can believe that Justin Fields will be afforded every opportunity to demonstrate that he truly is an NFL QB.
But, if Justin doesn’t take a Jalen Hurts-level step up, do you think Ryan Poles would offer him a $250+ million contract?
Finally, how many of you will be “destroyed” when Ryan Poles trades Justin Fields?
This is Field’s year unless he has an unfortunate injury. We have to see what Fields can do on a competent team that is all geared up with this mind-set. Last year was good experience but you can’t really judge a youthful talented player on a team with so many deficiencies as the ’22 Bears. Bagent has obvious talent and skill too. But he’s young and needs to win an NFL game. His chance will come, perhaps even in a few weeks or months. Never know for sure. If Fields gets banged up for a week or two we might… Read more »
I have to admit to being a big JF1 fan. But I hope he and Bagent can help each other grow. Fields has all the guts, talent, and drive to be great. But he still needs to work on his reads and some of his decision making. Maybe Bagent can help him with this. If he does, look out because JF1 will be unstoppable.
I honestly don’t think his rise on this team is over. If Fields continues on his same trajectory, Bagent could be the starter at some point this year. Can’t wait til week one to see how Fields looks with the real/full play book and new weapons. It sucks we won’t see him behind a healthy line, but if he has improved we should see it regardless of the line. One thing I will say about Fields tho… when Bagent threw that pick against Buffalo, Fields was the first guy over to the bench to talk to him and review the… Read more »
