White Sox GM Hunt: Other Names In The Mix Besides Chris Getz

-

Chris Getz remains the front-runner to be the White Sox next general manager but according to MLB Networks’ Jon Morosi, the White Sox are going to be interviewing more candidates.

Dispatch the lack of recent success and apparent dysfunction inside the White Sox organization there are plenty of reasons that the position is attractive. The White Sox are in a major market, play in an incredibly weak division, have money coming off the books this offseason, and have a loyal owner in Jerry Reinsdorf which means job security won’t be an issue.

Morosi reported on Thursday that Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo is viewed within the baseball industry as a potential candidate to take over baseball operations in Chicago.

He also made an appearance on 670 The Score and doubled down on Rizzo as a candidate while also listing James Click, the vice president of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Orioles general manager Mike Elias as potential fits.

Rizzo is one of the more intriguing options on the list. He took over as the Nationals general manager in 2009. During his tenure, the organization won four NL East Division titles (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017) and a World Series in 2019.

But according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Rizzo will soon be signing an extension to stay in Washington.

Nightingale also wrote that Rangers senior advisor Dayton Moore could join Chris Getz in a “key front office role”. It is likely that Moore is a candidate for the GM position. Moore was the Kansas City Royals general manager for 16 seasons, highlighted by back-to-back pennants and a World Series title in 2015. Getz worked closely with Moore at the time.

Moore built up an impressive farm system during his time with the Royals, something the White Sox have struggled with in recent years.  Moore’s nickel-and-dime approach in Kansas City makes him seem like a perfect fit for the current ownership.

David Stearns, the former president and GM of the Milwaukee Brewers is another potential fit. The Mets are currently the front-runner for Stearns and if the White Sox want to acquire his services it is going to be tough to show the same amount of commitment to spending that Mets owner Steve Cohen has.

Kim Ng got her start in professional baseball with the White Sox as an assistant director of baseball operations in 1990. She has since worked her way up the ladder and earned the title of the Miami Marlins general manager and the highest-ranking female baseball executive in MLB history.

As an assistant GM for the Yankees and Dodgers, she has seen what a well-run organization is supposed to look like and won a couple of World Series rings in the process. She was also the one who negotiated the Jake Burger trade with Kenny Williams.

Given her connections to the White Sox and experience, she seems like an ideal candidate.
