With No GM, The White Sox Are Still Making Confusing Moves

-

As refreshing as it was to see the White Sox fire Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn, Sox fans will not be fully relaxed until they see who they hire to replace both of them. In the meantime, I would imagine a combination of Jeremey Haber (the assistant GM) and Chris Getz are in charge.

They made a flurry of moves yesterday, as you can see from this post:

Now these aren’t the worst moves, but you’d like to see what Remillard can continue to do, especially over someone like Elvis Andrus, who won’t be on the team next year.

The DFA of Honeywell isn’t a surprise, as he has not pitched well for the Sox since they picked him up off waivers. It would be nice to see if they can squeeze any production out of him, as he was a top prospect just a few years ago. While at this point that is unlikely, I would rather see him than Bryan Shaw.

More confusing moves came in today, as they have refused to cut ties with Yasmani Grandal. Having him on the team at this point makes absolutely no sense. He has not produced and he won’t be on the team next year. The Sox need to prioritize the future at this point. Combine that with the many rumors about Grandal, and cutting him was a no-brainer. Except that is not what the Sox did…

Korey Lee Is Finally Up

The silver lining to all of this is the fact we finally get to see Korey Lee up with the big league team. After trading Kendall Graveman for him, it was only a matter of time before he was called up. I thought it would have been sooner, but better late than never.

The confusing part is with the corresponding move:

Look, I’m not saying that Carlos Perez has been amazing because he really hasn’t. But, he has hit .313 over his last seven games, so he’s worth at least an extended look. This is a lost season and the Sox will have a lot of roster decisions to make. Why not let him rotate in at catcher for the rest of the season instead of Grandal who will be gone? The Sox will lose absolutely nothing and they can see if there is a diamond in the rough, as Perez has shown some power at AAA. Worst case scenario he stinks and helps you lose games, getting you closer to the first pick in the draft.

The confusing moves have trickled down to Pedro Grifol, as he likes to play Trayce Thompson and Elvis Andrus over Oscar Colas and Lenyn Sosa, two young players who could prove to be decent major-league pieces. They need to see what these guys can do, as it is better to do that in a lost season instead of when you are trying to compete.

They need to trim the roster down to players who have an opportunity to compete for a spot next year and fringe AAAA players, so they can properly evaluate the talent. The White Sox need to completely wipe the organization once they hire the new GM, as the incompetence is laughable to this point.
