D.J. Moore Almost Threw Punches After A Hit On Justin Fields

-

When listening to D.J. Moore in interviews and watching him on the field, the wide receiver can come across as even-keel. While competitive as anybody in the NFL, he doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve most of the time. It takes a lot to get him riled up. Perhaps that is why he clicked with Justin Fields so quickly once he joined the Chicago Bears in March. The two have similar personalities and ways of approaching life and football. They’ve already become fast friends, and the connection continues to flourish in practice.

It appears the Indianapolis Colts came dangerously close to testing how far Moore would go for his quarterback. Chris Emma of Marquee Sports reported that Fields took a big hit during a long bomb to Velus Jones, resulting in the QB hitting the turf. The wide receiver didn’t care for that at all.

“As second-year wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. reached out to haul in a deep ball down the left sidelines, there was some commotion back at the line of scrimmage. Quarterback Justin Fields was knocked to the turf at Grand Park and the Bears were confronting the Colts.

DJ Moore, the Bears’ new No. 1 wide receiver, had to be held back from Colts defenders. Rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson came off the sidelines to defend his quarterback. It may have turned into a full-blown melee if left guard Teven Jenkins wasn’t covering down…

…Fortunately, Fields was fine and it was just a clean football play as a Colts defender was knocked into the Bears’ quarterback.”

The offending name was Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore.

He came on a blitz during the play. His momentum proved too strong, so when a Bears lineman reached out to block him, the corner was driven right into Fields. Head coach Matt Eberflus wasn’t happy about that, knowing both teams had agreed to keep hands off the quarterbacks.

D.J. Moore offered a reminder that he’s a fighter.

He isn’t afraid to throw hands if the situation warrants it. Seeing his quarterback needlessly knocked to the ground is one way to do it. This isn’t only about him and Fields being friends. It was also knowing the Bears starter was his best chance to have a big season. One bad hit means Moore has to catch passes from P.J. Walker for the rest of 2023. He already experienced that life in Carolina. He didn’t care for it. That explains why his reaction was so heated. It’s also another sign of how far Fields’ leadership has come.

Moore wasn’t the only one ready to fight before cooler heads prevailed. Eberflus and Colts head coach Shane Steichen deserve credit for preventing any major brawls from breaking out. Things were well-run. All moments of tension were quickly snuffed out. Still, it would’ve been wild to see D.J. Moore pull out the boxing moves. He’d probably make up for what he lacks in height and reach in quickness and tenacity. One thing is clear. Fields has way more bodyguards this season.

In a league where Andy Dalton signs a two-year $10 million contract, the Ryan Poles’ signing of PJ Walker (2 years, for $4 million) and Tyson Bagent, as an UDFA (for less than $907k per year; only $25k fully guaranteed) makes plenty of sense — both financially; and for their future value on the field. PJ Walker needs to shake off lots of rust (no doubt) but his career statistical accuracy is remarkably similar to JF1, in the NFL — and his TTT (time to throw) numbers (2.35 seconds) are among the best in the league. Tyson Bagent is much… Read more »

Please give us more guys like Moore and Teven Jenkins. These guys actually play like they care, and that sort of heart is what every Bear should exhibit. Give me guys with attitudes and a desire to get in the other teams face.

Sounds like D.J. Moore has definitely bought into the H.I.T.S. principle. 🤕💥🤛🏼

But seriously, I love the energy this team is exhibiting. This is going to be a fun team to root for this season.

PJ Walker needs to be shown the door. I’ve seen enough. I’ve read enough. I’d rather Chicago go get Josh McCown out of retirement to help Fields be a better passer and bring Bagent along.

Glad to see the Bears are fiesty. This one though… overblown. Accidents happen want like the Colts player was gloating.
