It was very unclear what the White Sox were going to do heading into the draft. There were many different routes they could have taken, especially considering they went high school in back-to-back first-round picks the last two years. They have a lot of needs to fill with a weak system, so it doesn’t hurt to go best player available. This is what the Sox did with their first-round selection.
Round 1
With their first-round pick, the White Sox selected Jacob Gonzalez, a shortstop from Ole Miss.
Some people had linked Gonzalez to the White Sox, and it seems they were right. He is a left-handed hitting shortstop that has shown to have a good amount of power.
Last year he hit .327 with 10 bombs and 51 RBIs in just 50 games. He hit 18 home runs the year before, so if he can continue working on his power, he could become a legitimate threat.
The Whtie Sox are hoping to pair Gonzalez with Colson Montgomery up the middle for the infield of the future. If they both pan out how they are supposed to, it could be a dangerous duo.
Round 2
With their second-round pick, the White Sox selected Grant Taylor, a pitcher from LSU.
This is an interesting pick, as he was ranked 102 on the board according to MLB. But, many people believed he would be a first-round talent if he was able to play this year.
He pitched out of the bullpen for LSU, but he has the stuff to move into the rotation. Hopefully, he can come back healthy and show why he was a top pick.
Round 3
With their third-round pick, the White Sox selected Seth Keener, a pitcher from Wake Forest.
While he struggled his first two years at Wake Forest, he really came into his own this past year. He has all of the tools to be a starter in the pros, he just needs to take the next step in his development.
Last year he had a 2.69 ERA in 70 innings and had 94 strikeouts in those innings. He seems to have some good stuff and he could be a fast riser in the system.
Round 4
In the fourth round, the Chicago White Sox selected Calvin Harris, a catcher from Ole Miss. The second player they have taken from Ole Miss this draft class.
Last season he hit .321 with 12 homeruns and 46 RBIs. If he can continue to develop his defensive game, he could be a steal in the fourth round.
A couple. of great picks to add to Luis Robert, and a few others. Clean house like the Cubs did as they are fun to watch. Unlike the Sox, they field, run, and put the ball in play.
